Why go through all the hassle of manually installing a Linux system from scratch?

Why go through all the hassle of manually installing a Linux system from scratch when you can just download an existing distribution like Debian or Redhat?

Mill J 02-01-2018 02:02 PM

Why go to all the hassle of asking when you could do a Google search?

ondoho 02-01-2018 02:34 PM

why go to all the hassle of starting yet another thread that can only lead to a useless rant at best, and a fullgrown flamewar at worst?
as if the first few dozen weren't enough to teach you a lesson?

pompous: affectedly and irritatingly grand, solemn, or self-important; arrogant

I'm not sure I understand the hostility provoked by the original question. It's just a question. Maybe it was sincere. Maybe it deserves some answers?

I also am not sure that there have been that many threads on this topic that got closed due to rants, flame wars, or unfriendliness. The most common subject in this sub-forum that CAN degenerate into unfriendliness is Systemd. But just simply "Why LFS?", I don't remember any trouble from that. I have been reading threads in this sub-forum (and building BLFS systems) for years now. IMO, the regular posters in here have been nearly universally polite, helpful, and good advocates for our little "distro" here.

My answer to the original question is a little like why I like to grow vegetables in my garden even though I could just go to the store. I like to do things for myself. I learn things that way. I have more control over the outcome. I think Beekmans started Linux From Scratch as an educational project. He explains all that and his own motivations in the foreword section of every LFS book. Take a look at that. Eventually, many people just get hooked on learning more and more about how a Linux system works and how to build one exactly the way they want it. How was that for starters?

Draw your own conclusions.

Cuz the dogs are fed and bedded down. The bills are paid. I'm bored. I wanna be smarter. Knowledge requires effort.

Then there is freedom of choice in my universe.

One of these days. I just might learn something new. Oh yeah. Don't Redhat and Debian have netinstalls?

frankbell 02-01-2018 09:13 PM

To answer the original question, to learn stuff.

hazel 02-02-2018 02:38 AM

For fun of course! And because it gives me a system that contains precisely the software I want and nothing else.

BW-userx 02-02-2018 09:03 AM

it has a CPU give it something (more) to do.

Why go to LFS ? --> I like it.
Why don't go to Debian or Redhat? --> I don't like them.
