Why go through all the hassle of manually installing a Linux system from scratch?
Why go through all the hassle of manually installing a Linux system from scratch when you can just download an existing distribution like Debian or Redhat?
why go to all the hassle of starting yet another thread that can only lead to a useless rant at best, and a fullgrown flamewar at worst?
as if the first few dozen weren't enough to teach you a lesson?
I'm not sure I understand the hostility provoked by the original question. It's just a question. Maybe it was sincere. Maybe it deserves some answers?
I also am not sure that there have been that many threads on this topic that got closed due to rants, flame wars, or unfriendliness. The most common subject in this sub-forum that CAN degenerate into unfriendliness is Systemd. But just simply "Why LFS?", I don't remember any trouble from that. I have been reading threads in this sub-forum (and building BLFS systems) for years now. IMO, the regular posters in here have been nearly universally polite, helpful, and good advocates for our little "distro" here.
My answer to the original question is a little like why I like to grow vegetables in my garden even though I could just go to the store. I like to do things for myself. I learn things that way. I have more control over the outcome. I think Beekmans started Linux From Scratch as an educational project. He explains all that and his own motivations in the foreword section of every LFS book. Take a look at that. Eventually, many people just get hooked on learning more and more about how a Linux system works and how to build one exactly the way they want it. How was that for starters?
