Not installing through LiveCD
Hi all
I'm trying to install Linux on a very old computer; - Celeron 366 - 64Mb RAM I've tried installing Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS but the livecd is so slow that it takes about 45mins to load the desktop so actually going through the install process would probably take hours! What I would like to do is install one of these fine Linux distros via a more direct installation process, perhaps via a text based installation. I'm pretty confident that I can get Linux running on this machine as I've had it running on something with specs only slightly higher and it would make a great beginners PC. Any help much appreciated. |
Try these 3 Distros very nice for older machines
DSL http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=3 Slackware http://www.slackware.com/ you might also want to try Deli Linux, I haven't tried it yet but will do so in the near future. It was made specifically for use on prehistoric hardware Deli http://delili.lens.hl-users.com/ Another thing you could do is vist: http://www.linux-laptop.net/ http://www.tuxmobil.org/ and see if your make/model of laptop is there. see what other users suggest hope this Helps Jake |
Try Debian Etch, the first full cd or if you have broadband connection try the netinstall. Get a Window Manager instead of KDE or Gnome desktop.
Also Slackware would be good to try. |
