Hi sorry, that was a little inconciderate of me. to edit the Mandrake Control Center to your linux Control Center open /usr/sbin/drakconf.real & /usr/lib/menu/DrakConf with your text editor and find all bits that refer to mandrake or mandriva and change them to your own linux name to edit the Mandrake Info Tool open /usr/bin/cfg2html with your text editor and there is one bit near the top in a block of writing that referes to mandrake or mandriva just change that to your distro name. to edit the menu editor open /usr/share/menudrake/menudrake.glade with your text editor and change any bits that refer to Mandrake or Mandriva again to your own distro name. Change the "Welcome to Mandrake Linux" message on boot open /etc/mandrake-release with your text editor and just change the name of the distro from mandrake to your distor name. There are also 2 other files that need editing for this but kde crashes if you try and open them where they are so copy /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit & /etc/rc.d/rc.local to somewhere where you can easily work on them now open both files and change any bits that refer to mandrake or mandriva to your distro name and when finnished coppy them back to there original place. After you have done this restart your pc and press esc for verbose mode and you shold see the message Welcome to your distro name 2007 I hope this info is usefull to somebody Cheers Jym p.s. valentlinux.org will be up and running shortly |

What can you do and bring (alone? or not alone?) that other distro/ projects cannot bring? There are plenty of mandriva based distro, pclinuxos for example. Distro proliferation is not always best, targeted effort can benefit more the community sometimes/often. I hope you do not mind my comment |
Hi, I know there are plenty of Distributions out there and I must admint my distro offers nothing that any other don't offers... It's just something I want to do... Don't ask me why though lol

It is a big problem IMHO I suppose mandriva free is all GPL so you can use it as a base. I advise you make very clear the goal of your distro, if it just "for fun" let people know. At the end of the day people judge distros based for example on maintener effort, availability, look of distro, offer from the distro, size of the community, and an endless list of criteria. You will probably experience "fitest survive", and so much work, demand or support from people that either you give up, go in another direction... Did you look into how many distro are created? How long they survive in average? How often they are updated? Did you think about being involved in cooker or the development of a given distro first to gain experience rather than starting from scratch? It is about your time being best profitable to you and the community. I wish somebody else post to give you another opinion. I will ask moderator to split thread |
Hello Emmanuel_uk, I think your opinion is very well though out!
I know there are thousands of distro's out there and a fair chunk of them are not maintained and a the majority of small distros dont last for long (by small i dont mean in size, i mean small as in unknown) The main goal of my distro is firs off to creat another distro that offers nothing new just another dektop with some cool apps. but once i have the hang of this i will be creating a live cd that uses KDE and has all the apps that can be used to restore lost data on a hard drive (all started when i accidentally formatted my hdd the other day). Thank you for your comments. Jym |
Hi,
Thanks. Trying to help you to go in the best direction have you heard of mandy based distro Trinity Rescue Kit | CPR for your computer http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.ph...=1&front_id=12 |
I must say I didn't recognise any of those names, but I have used similar in the past.

helix, RIPlinux PLD Rescue CD SystemRescueCd A list is available at http://www.linux-sec.net/Distro/ see rescue cd and forensics / post-mortems (Am sure I am missing some still) Good luck with your development. I hope you bring the best of a few distros, or come with some novel ideas |
Yea it's based on PCLos which is based on mandrake live!
I am still thinking of the novel ideas... but i'm sure i can find one of the missing sectors in the linux market Jym |
