help - slow installation on SuSE 9.1 pro

hi all, i have a question that i am hoping someone can help. i have a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz Hyper-thread system that i cam trying to install suse 9.1 pro on. however, i can't seem to make ithe installation to go faster it says it will take 9 (yes i said nine) hours to complete the installation. i am installing it on my new 250 gb maxtor HDD. it's trying to install out of a plextor cd burner. i have also tried to install it from the Sony DVD burner as well. don;t know if that makes any difference.

I have installed 9.1 pro on my laptop and it installes super fast.

can anyone help?
please
thanks

Using the CD/DVD drive with any other discs works normal? It would seem something is hosing those drives.

I can install Suse 9.0 from ftp install faster then that!

thanks for the reply BittaBrotha

everythign seems to install ok. i installed Mandrake in about 1.5 hours. and installed red hat in about the same time.
but for some reason i just can;t get Suse 9.0 nor 9.1 to install any faster.
i left it on last night to install and it was suppose to take about 2 hours for the first CD but it took over 8 hours to finish installing the first CD. very strange. maybe my hardware is in compatible with SuSE?
Pentium 4 2.8ghz w/ HT

Asus P4P800 mobo
512 DDR400 ram
ATi 8500 128mb video
ATi TV Wonder video capture
6 USB ports (nothing used)
4 Firewire ports (nothing used)
Plextor CD-RW
Sony DrU-510U DVD+- rw
Maxtor 250gb hdd
Zip drive

like i said, it works (installs normal) with all other distro, and Suse installs fine on my laptop.
any sugggestions

** Update. finally got it installed in 23 hours. after the install it took about another hour to get all the hardware setup. so finally it's done, i think to my self. i rebooted the system and it booted up in 6 mins. so i decided to reboot later on that night. after i rebooted i get a text log-in. but since i don;t know how to long into X-windows into KDE i am stuck. HELP!!!!!

It might be because of the read speed of your drives, my cdburner is a 24x read (i think) and it didnt take me more than an hour to intall SuSE 9.1 . Im sure youve thought of this though.

osiris32 05-29-2004 09:05 PM

yeah i checked the cd read speed. the plextor is 48X and the DVD is 32X. i am really stomped. it's weird how it works on my other machines and just not this one.
tried disabling the hyper thread but to no avail. pulled off all USB devices, and such, still nothing..

argh..

guitardan311 05-30-2004 11:44 AM

yeah if you have a 32x drive and at least a 5400rpm HDD then it shoulnt take that long. Are you trying to install all the packets available or just the default?

osiris32 05-30-2004 01:56 PM

i have tried with both the default and the optional stuff.

it just seems like that as soon as put the CD in the CD or DVD player it slows down. i have no idea why it would be like that.

Maybe try stripping your system. Go with only one cd drive, one hd, and your video. Go as minimal as you can and see what that does.
