amd64 suse 9.0 pro installation problem
 

I have a amd64 system (asus K8V motherboard with K8T800 chipset).
When i try to install Linux Suse 9.0 pro AMD64 version, the system hangs at :
>misc 1.3 "read floppy"

I don't know where to go from here, has someone encountered the same problem with a potential solution?

Unfortunately I don't have any solutions to offer, but I have the exact same problem. If I find anything, I'll let you know. Of course, knowing someone else is in the same boat has its own form of comfort.

System specs:
Asus SK8V nForce 3 Pro Chipset
AMD Athlon 64 FX51
1gig RAM
120Gb SATA WD1200JB
configured on Promise SATA raid 0 array

1 question: Are you using your Promise SATA raid for your hard drive? Could this be the common link?

where did u get the 64 bit version .??? i have opteron cpu and installed 9.2 64 bit version works fine except for the net card i have isnt recognised.. i have the asus sk8n board :(

Straight from SuSe. Brand new off the shelf DVD Distribution. Sounded like fun, but I think I'll probably need to put in an older ATA100 Hard Drive and a new... err... old nic to get it working. ;-)

Still no SATA support but I did get past the crashing problems. Two steps: 1) Download and install new bios (v.1004) from ASUS. 2) Choose no ACPI option in main menu. I guess I'll need to buy or scrounge an older hard disk to get it up and running though. Any one in Richmond, VA have a spare 20gigs they can give me. ;)

Umm... the SK8V is based on the VIA K8T800 Chipset, not the nVidia one. Anyway, I've been trying every Linux distro. I've found I can get the SuSE installer to get partway, but I think it has to be the Promise RAID thats the problem. The Mandrake installer (with auto-detection off) refuses to load the low level promise driver or the SATA RAID driver. I have suceeded, however, with FreeBSD, although installing a desktop environment has shown problems, since its still a beta installer and they didn't have the installer options on the FTP server I tried, so I did a base install off the mini-install CD and then tried to install from the ports, but some of them refused to compile on AMD64. I will note this however (on my sig you see) I run a server using FreeBSD and it does have linux compat in i386, so this will probably soon be ported to the AMD64 version and stuff... i don't really know now sort of rambling, but anyway I think if I got the full install cd i could get it to work. I should do that, and I'll get back here when i do. FreeBSD does have, IMO, better hardware support it seems than Linux, so just offering my 2c and thinking its worth a shot...

Problem is the SUSE for AMD wont see SATA disks.

I had to throw away 2 new 80 gig SATA disks I bought for my system and install a old IDE 20 gig disk when I built mine.

SATA support under Suse 9.0 is works.

I have completed an installation based on a dual opeteron with dual SATA drive in RAID, it was a bit tricky but it works fine.

I have completed an installation based on a card from MSI using the same chip set. I had crashes linked to the SATA and the APCI.
I have written a HOWTO mainly for the SATA issue but most issue seems similar.

suse 9.0 on HP zv5000v install fails
 

I just got an hp zv5000z (athlon 64 3200) portable 80gb hd 256mb ram so I could run consistent linuxes on my operton 144 desktop and on road.
but
0.) preinstalled windows xp home works
1.) Box install of suse 9.0 for amd64 panics kernal (bad RIP)
2.) Box install of suse 9.0 32 works
3.) Install of windows xp 64 bit works but cygwin fails
5.) windows xp pro installs
6.) Mandrake 64 installs and runs but screen is 1050x1400 instead of max 1050x1680 however update fails

I am most familar with suse and redhat

Any suggestions b4 I try redhat 64?

Mandrake 10 beta loads and seems to work but I thought it was a bit klunky (It is a beta however)
Fedora for AMD64 works well and is now my preferred choice

Hardware notes (which don't belong here but may be of interest)
1.) HP tech support could not find memory spec (I think its PC2700 sodimm)
2.) HP tech support refuse to tell me where the other memory slot is or how to get to it)

I've been having problems with fedora core for 64. It keeps hanging in the post install. It gets about half then stops. Any suggestion? I have a asus k8v deluxe motherboard

I don't have a good answer on a post install hang. As a statistical and engineering user I have found it most time effective to try various distro's until I find one that works instead of fighting with hanging distros (unless someone in a forum has a quick answer). Have you tried:
suse 9.0 for amd (they have a free net install which I have not tested. but their commercial 9.0 DVD works on my opteron 144 tyan tomcat desktop) (This is my current desktop linux os)
Turbo Linux for amd64 installed on 144 ok
Mandrake 9.2 and 10 beta installed on zv5000z ok
gentoo and freebsd have amd64 distros which I have not installed

yeah, i agree with the just trying different distros and that is what actually finally worked. The free internet download of suse was no problem (as soon as i found out the ips of the ftp mirrors)
