Why do Geeks have Glasses?

I am so tired of the media view that all hackers, crackers are glass wearing geeks. I do not need local newspapers seinging virus makers or programmers as geeks. I have done model shoots but prefer not to be part of that trend. I am tired need 2hrs sleep goodnight. My body is failing me

super_ Q 05-12-2004 09:21 PM

Easy, cuz they read too much ;)

I've cleaned off my glasses here, but I'm still having trouble with seinging. :D

witeshark 05-12-2004 09:57 PM

I've always wondered. What if you really need the glasses to see at all and you don't know where they are? How do you find them? I'm not making fun, I really don't know, seriously

BajaNick 05-12-2004 10:26 PM

I wear glasses and I cant believe that fun is being made of someone with a seeing affliction.
Seeing afflictions are very common in the world today and making fun of people is offensive and doesnt help us at all. My glasses are almost 3/4 of an inch thick and I can only wear them for about 6 hours then my neck begins to hurt from the weight. Last year I had to have back surgery to prop up my neck so my glasses would stop sliding off due to my hump back.
Please think before posting such offensive material. Thank you.

You stumble around like a doofus for quite awhile, until you happen upon the missing spectacles (or until you remember that you have a spare pair in your dresser drawer)

Are you some kind of sicko?? you think its funny invoking a christian right wing assault on us defenseless muslums??

SciYro 05-13-2004 12:58 AM

i have no clue what your talking about BajaNick, and who the hell said i was christian?

qanopus 05-13-2004 02:10 AM

BajaNick, what the f*** are you talking about? Remember that muslims as well as Christians regularly come to this board so mind what you post.

pepsi 05-13-2004 11:57 AM

what do glasses have to do with muslims and christians

witeshark 05-13-2004 12:15 PM

The Muslim remark and a few others were just flame bait

unSpawn 05-13-2004 01:46 PM

Right they are. Before this escalates, everyone please ignore remarks by BajaNick. Please do not feed the trolls.
@BajaNick: please don't pull stunts like that. If you *have* to play agent provocateur at least respect other people's threads: start your own one. Maybe also next time put some more effort into it ;-p

mermxx 05-13-2004 03:52 PM

at lot of peeps/geeks who don`t need glasses wear glasses to look more intellectual....so maybe being intellectual is a form of geekiness.....or maybe its the non glasses wearers that are jealous...who knows!?
+ u never get smacked in the face when u r wearing glasses lol!

HadesThunder 05-13-2004 04:49 PM

My eyes are still quiet sharp, but get tired quickly, as I am on a old teli like monitor 10 hrs a day and not a LCD monitor. But touch wood I won't need glasses. Does anyone know the name of these old monitors? What makes someone look more intelligent, glasses or beards?

mermxx 05-13-2004 05:25 PM

beards and moustaches are YUK....i remember holidaying in malta years ago and someone told me that men shave off their facial hair during the summer months because when its hot bugs live on the food and drink bacteria that multiply in the hair eww eww eww

I have a bit of a beard.

I don't let stuff get caught up in it, any more than anybody else gets chili on their chins. :D

I also wear, glasses, tho not in that shot.

HadesThunder 05-13-2004 05:49 PM

I have a frenchie beard/designer stubble. As I shower every day, I doubt I would get things groing in it.

i got both, i hate shaving cause it hurts, so now i haven't shaved in about 6 months i think (and for some reason the bottom of my chin don't really grow hair at all, and my mustache hasn't grown in like .. forever)... or got a hair cut .... anyways

you obviously haven't met this one girl i know, she smacked my glasses off like 10 times in 1 school year (thats at least 10 times), altho i didn't mind it, whatever doesn't hurt feels good is what i always say :) (altho i classify hurt as in breaking of bones, or serious sprains .... so might not wanna listen to me)

and where i live wearing gasses(in my former school at least) is almost asking for someone to smack them off (glad I'm outa that hell hole :) )

titanium_geek 05-15-2004 07:47 AM

I wear glasses because my eyes hurt + mega death headaches when I use the computer. Beards only make you look wiser if they at least reach your chest, or you have a full beard (nothing fancy) and a bit more in the age category.

titanium_geek

vectordrake 05-31-2004 07:49 PM

Yeah. I got both and still feel as silly as before. Its damn hard to find those suckers when you take 'em off!!!

jaz 05-31-2004 09:07 PM

beat the geek stereotype and get a gold grill across your teeth, wear some wife beaters, and get yourself tattooed!!

flamah 06-01-2004 10:34 PM

they are called - CRT Monitors

esher2292 06-02-2004 02:31 PM

LOL,I think that geeks are seen as wearing glasses because most people think of people who wear glasses as someone who knows a lot about computers/tech--I wear glasses but now wear contacts. I'm still treated as a geek though!

I already have tattoes of evil creatures that haunt the devil, I have a grill for stir frying animal flesh, but not on my teeth, but I don't know what wife beaters are. Are they dungareens? I am not American so don't know the slang.

jaz 06-02-2004 07:26 PM

RE:

Wife beaters are basically white tank top undershirts. They got the term because alot of low class men wore em who beat their spouses...Personally I dont think the two go hand in hand

LinuxLala 07-14-2004 09:56 AM

Got a beard and I wear glasses. Then again, RMS has a beard(I don't give a damn what you call it) and Linus wears glasses.

Stupidest thing you ever heard huh...

HadesThunder 07-14-2004 09:17 PM

I don't see women complaining about Craig Davids designer stubble and I don't see men going off Anastacia because she wears glasses. Both are intelligent and in some cases se*y.

I wear coloured glasses when I don't wont the secret service to recognize me as Bill Laden and Allah to recognize me as Britney Spears.

LinuxLala 07-15-2004 12:34 AM

Bacteria in the beards, no no you got it all wrong. We keep our beards long for moths and cocoons and and and... umm ...I'll figure something out

:D :D

SciYro 07-15-2004 01:16 AM

HadesThunder: i find shaving nasty,.. its pure torture for me .. so i don't shave, and i haven't got a haircut in months (in half a year or so ill be able to put it in a ponytail me thinks :) )

I'm just to lazy to cut/shave my hair (plus shaving hurts, and you have to do it everyday)

LinuxLala 07-15-2004 01:55 AM

SciYro, it took me little over 10 months before I could put my hair in a ponytail. Kept it like that for close to two months but had to cut it off 'coz the summers here are awful.

I still have a beard though. Get it trimmed twice a month :)

programmershous 07-16-2004 12:07 PM

well I have glasses so that girls think I am a geek and I earn so much  :D
When they realize I am a really stupid guy they fly away. :tisk:
Hey girl come back I have cash (she comes back running  )
ok here you are some bucks,
go and buy yourself some new clothes because you really look ugly :jawa:

HadesThunder 07-16-2004 08:10 PM

The only glasses I have are £1 yellow plastic glasses to make me look ugly and smart when going to an interview.
Still have the frenchie beard, althought I reverted to a LOTR Aragon beards for a while and realised it took too much work at the cheeks and neck.
SciRo, why does it hurt to shave? I trim and shave my designer stubble every day and it does not hurt. But when I shave and trim my crotch every week it sometimes goes red, but does not hurt.

HadesThunder 07-16-2004 08:12 PM

LinuxLala. I always figured you were a woman, and never expected you would have a beard. Thats my dreams of meeting a SuperModel female geek.:(

LinuxLala 07-17-2004 12:34 AM

Sorry to have your dreams dashed away. I really am. But I can't be your supermodel geek unless...

heh heh heh :D :D

HadesThunder 07-17-2004 08:20 PM

unless...? you have a shave or you have a sex change?

Brain Drop 07-18-2004 04:45 PM

I did have glasses untill I had the prk surgery (went with prk instead of lasik for the better recovery drugs). But I am still a geek, just in disguise. Until there is an emergency and I am needed. Like the opposite of Clark Kent / Superman.

Any guy who said the last sentence to me would get rugby tackled to the ground:D But then if you changed to buy yourself some new shoes or some new glasses I would be quite happy. ;)

Along with yourself? Steroids and body buidling are the bane on feminity.
Geeks can be macho. Mike Tyson was a Cisco Guru before he bit of a CCNA's ear. Honest :)

olly300 08-30-2004 01:07 AM

I am not a guy.

Not everyone who uses linux is a guy :D

And I definitely don't use steroids. I don't want a hairy chest or a beard. I don't body build either as the muscles obtained would be useless for doing proper sport.

I have met some nice looking geeks (male variety) ....... but that's a different story.;)

nuka_t 08-30-2004 01:16 AM

im going to get lasik.

i wear contacts though, i dont wee why people wear glasses. you dont have to anymore.

olly300 08-30-2004 01:39 AM

I wear contacts when doing sport and when I can be bothered in the day.

I was interested in laser surgery until I noticed that all opticians and other eye specialists I know wear glasses, and actually need to wear them.

zackarya 09-04-2004 08:44 PM

I have a theory on the whole glasses = intelligence stereotype. See if you agree. In the days when paper first started to become available it wasn't anything like it is now. I suggest that when one would write on this paper, that it would be distorted somewhat. As it aged and was handled it would become even more distorted, so the scholars of the time would use a simple magnifying glass to be able to read it. Thus, since most people at the time couldn't read unless they were educated, glasses = intellect. Of course it could of been common practice before the days of paper. This one was just off the top of my head so, well you know.

Radiouk 09-04-2004 09:16 PM

 I thought it was cool these days to wear glasses:confused:

I wear glasses in doors and wear contacts we I go out:rolleyes:

Laser's $3000/eye here (have to be done every 5 years) - out
I'd love to wear contacts, but they dry out far too much for me inside the building I work at - intolerable ($30/week for eyedrops was ridiculous)
I wear glasses...:(

mydini 09-04-2004 10:39 PM

Its that age old question...which came first glasses or geek..

nuka_t 09-05-2004 03:04 AM

well the geeks had to invent the glasses, normal people are too stupid.

vecotr, as for the contacts, get some that last for a month of continuous use, and use them only during the day. those dont dry out much.

as for lasik, my aunt had it for a 1000bucks and she only had to do it once.

vectordrake 09-05-2004 08:41 AM

I got that kind. 30 day disposables. It was not the lenses. It was the super dry environment.

DrNeil 09-05-2004 09:38 AM
