I tried re-installing Slackware in VirtualBox again...let's see what I screwed up this time!

No man pages:

Code:

sh: /usr/bin/gtbl: No such file or directory
sh: /usr/bin/nroff: No such file or directory

No Firefox:

Code:

/usr/lib/firefox-3.5.2/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libatk-1.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Actually, make that no GTK+ apps at all (for the same reason above: missing libatk).

This is why I need a package manager with dependency resolution!!

And no, I'm not going to do the "full" install, because the VDI I've created for the virtual machine is only 10GiB, so I don't know if that's enough to hold *everything*. Plus which, I don't like the idea of having useless daemons and whatnot running when I don't need them.

If you did a full install, you wouldn't have those problems.
Ah, no. There is no man page for gtbl (whatever that is). But there is for nroff.

A full install is about 4.8 GB.

...oh.

*Fires up VB to try a "full" Slackware install*...

Actually, the problem was that I was getting those messages for man <anything>. Not anymore, though (hopefully), because it's doing a "full" re-install as I write this post.

And you will be prompted for which "useless daemons" you
want to run, anyway. That, and in slack it's as easy as
Code:

chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.useless_daemon_of_choice
to stop them from running.

If they're called from one of the "core" start-up scripts
like rc.M they're commonly there for good reasons.

Cheers,
Tink

Mostly I was just worried about things running that wouldn't apply to a VM (e.g. PCMCIA card services).

brianL 03-22-2010 02:41 PM

You worry too much. :)

lupusarcanus 03-22-2010 02:44 PM

I may fire up a VM w/ Slack too.

This will would be my 3rd time.

The first two failed miserably.

I don't know though. I'm going too be happily using Arch for a while.

I just love the Slackware community here at LQ thats all. And i do find comilind from sour ce to be fun. (As long as i don't have to deal with a thousand dependencies.)

brianL 03-22-2010 02:53 PM

No, Daniel Craig's too ugly to play brianL. I suppose I'll have to do it myself...oh, hum. Problems, problems, problems.

Arch does not show the icon by default.

Arch user agent icon instructions for Firefox:
  1. Enter "about:config" in the address bar.
  2. Agree to the warning.
  3. Right-click anywhere in the list, and click New->String.
  4. Set the name to "general.useragent.vendor".
  5. Set the value to "Arch Linux".

And that from the guy who advocates correct spelling and grammar? ;}

lupusarcanus 03-22-2010 03:27 PM

Well, damn, I don't use Firefox.

I did try something with Google's CLI user string option; perhaps it'll work?
