pronunciation woes
hey
i have a few questions on pronunciation of some linux stuff gentoo: is it like JEN-2 or just Gen-2? debian: DAY-BY-AN or DAY-bee-N? iptables: I-P-tables, or just ip-tubbles? if you don't have any clue what i mean, say them out loud an i hope it makes sense. |
i'm not sure about gentoo, but debian is like "de-bee-an" and iptables is like "I.P. tables"...
PS: i suspect gentoo is like "gen-too" with the "gen" as in "generation" but like i said, i'm not sure... |
going off memory but i think on gentoo's site it says gentoo like gentle its in the faq I think
|
yes.. gentoo is pronouced like "Gentle" with 'oo' or "Jen-2"
Debian is "Dee-Bee-an" and yes.. .it's "I-P-Tables" |
what about kubuntu and ubuntu?
|
debian is NOT pronounced "dee-bee-an"... it's pronouced "deb-EE-uhn"...
as in Debra + Ian... (Ian the founder and Debra his wife)... |
YEAH!! What win32sux said!!

i guess kubuntu is pronounced the same as ubuntu but with a koo sound at the beginning (koo-boon-too)... although being kde-based and all i wouldn't be surprised if it's supposed to be pronounced K-ubuntu (kay-oo-boon-too), but i doubt it... |

Gentoo is pronounced with a soft 'G' as in gentle. For both distros this information is on their websites. I know. That's how I found out in the first place :) |

fstab is f-s-tab and not f-stab right?
|
yeah, "eff-ess-tab"... although "eff-stab" does have a nice, evil, ring to it... ;)
|
SQL (ess-que-ell)
or sequel I know MySQL is My-S-Q-L, but S-Q-L or sequel for the non My-type? |
Samba:
pronounced \som ba\ or \sam ba\ I've always pronounced it \som ba\ but I've heard it the other way. |
yeah, "sam-bah" as that's how samba (the brazilian dance) is pronounced - and i assume the name comes from that, as the program makes *nix and windows "dance" together... :)
|
:(
I always pronounced it "som-bah" like they do in the song "La Bamba" |
|
Yeah, I know, but the words are so similar I just borrowed the pronunciation.
|
"bamba" is pronounced just like "samba": bam-bah... there's no bom-bah in the song... ;)
|
Sorry, but when I listen to the song I hear "bom".
But, oh well.... To each his own. |
All these words and no one mentioned SuSE?!?!
|
i've heard people pronounce it "soo-zzz" (like Dr. Seuss) and also "soo-zee" (like the nickname Susy)... honestly i don't know which it is... i would imagine the former, but i'm not sure... anyone???
|
I've been pronouncing it Soo see, but what do I know? I've always said F-Stab...
|
I've heard it pronounced soo-say
|
BTW, what does suse mean? is it a german word or something?
|
Okay:
gentoo = jen-too debian = deb-ee-in suse = soo-sah (Yes that is the correct pronunciation) gnu = gah-new linux = lin-icks(unlike a guy I work with who says lie-nicks(which drives my up the wall) He also calls mysql My-See-Quel) * Unless your from another country where the pronunciation of Linux can vary widely(Ask Mr. Torvalds) |
Could I just ask, please, that anyone wishing to post here do a search for "linux pronunciation" - there are about 3 or 4 quite long threads already out there. Your questions have already been answered.
