Not really:
This point has been brought up , a little over a month ago , here , and then it was mentioned , that Mr. Torvaldus once told "the masses" how to pronounce his name : Lynn-us.
I take it , Mr. T. knows best how to pronounce his own name.
Didn't know that, interesting point, but still if someone, other than Torvaldus wrote down their name Linus you would say Line - us right?? or wrong???
Linux Torvalds has said that his name is pronounced Lyn-us, but he doesn't really care how you pronounce Linux because he said he accepts that different countries pronounce his name different ways.
quote:
if u learnt english in school u would have learnt that...
if u have i then a consananent then a vowel then it is said eye
so it would be LINE - UX but if Torvaldus likes it LYN - UX then i guess its his decision!
The problem with that is Linus is not english, unless you are talking about Charlie Brown. The other problem with your english lesson is we are talking about a name. Now I am not an english major, but when you are talking about names, all rules go out the window.
What is that rule- i before e exept after c etc. etc., but my last name is the opposite of that, although it is a german name and not english.
Oh well, enough of my blabbering.
Back to the topic, just pronounce it however you want to. Who really cares.
Heh, interesting thread. Well, if anyone is interested in Linux, then I suggest you find a movie called "The Code". It's about GNU/Linux. How it was created, how it is maintained, who are the people that maintain it and etc. It's a VERY good film. So there's this one part where they show this game. It's called: "LinuxWorld Expo GeekBowl 2000" And there are 2 teams. The Geeks and the Nerds. And the first question from the easy category is: "How do you pronounce Linux?" The first one to answer that was Jon "Maddog" Hall from the Geeks. He said: "I pronounce Linux as "Linux". (sounds like Linix) However, if you're Linus Torvalds you probably pronounce it as LYN - UX. On the other hand if you come from the West Coast of the United States you pronounce it as LINE - UX. And as Linus said he doesn't care how you pronounce it as long as you just USE it!" I think that's a pretty good explanation
