If I was feeling spiteful I would wonder what Oregon Jim (see the Religion thread in this forum) would make of this quote

LOL, I felt so human posting it; after looking for good quotes from your last: "Sydney J. Harris " post. :p

Sidney J Harris certainly has a way with words!

Learn all you can from the mistakes of others, you won't have time to make them all yourself.

Be nice to your enemies, it will drive them NUTS!

The one who says it cannot be done should never interrupt the one who is doing it.

It is better to be defeated on principle than to win on lies.

Most of these one liner's came from a 'Quote a Day' calendar.....now where the hell did I put it?

It is therefore most especially in the present democratic times that the true friends of the liberty and the greatness of man ought constantly to be on the alert, to prevent the power of government from lightly sacrificing the private rights of individuals to the general execution of its designs. At such times, no citizen is so obscure that it is not very dangerous to allow him to be oppressed; no private rights are so unimportant that they can be surrendered with impunity to the caprices of a government.– Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America [1835]

True discipline is self-discipline, which can only be attained by independently pursuing the opportunities, and braving the rigors, of the real world: by embracing both freedom and responsibility. It takes being independent and free to truly be all that you can be.– Dan Sanchez

The most effective answer to an insult is silence.

It is a grave error to let any mechanical device realise that you are in a hurry.

Anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn't the work they're supposed to be doing.

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the most tempting moment.

"I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you" - Neil deGrasse Tyson

“Everyone carries a part of society on his shoulders; no one is relieved of his share of responsibility by others. And no one can find a safe way for himself if society is sweeping towards destruction . . . What is needed to stop the trend towards socialism and despotism is common sense and moral courage.”-Ludwig von Mises

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

“It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”-Samuel Adams

An elective despotism was not the government we fought for, but one which should not only be founded on true free principles, but in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among general bodies of magistracy, as that no one could transcend their legal limits without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.– Thomas Jefferson

The third one reminds me of a couple from another well-known philosopher:

Quote:

It's amazing what one can accomplish when one doesn't know what one can't do.
Quote:

It's amazing the headway you can make when you stop playing games.
