There is much metal that is political and social, and metal bands and punk bands share much of the same ideologies and both tend to be a reaction to the peace, love, and happiness of the 60's and 70's. The only real difference IMHO is the metal tends to gate keep more than punk and punk tend to be overt in its nihilism it's two different reactions to the same side of the coin.

I'm generally all punk all the time I tend to find kindred spirits in the rap crowd and the heavy metal crowd, it all tends to be blue-collar and it all addresses real issues.

IMO The three groups need to find their similarities not their differences because they're all looking for the same thing while addressing it differently.

I ignore all the politicalness. If a song sounds good, I listen. If it sounds like crap, I don't. That's how music should be judged. Who cares if there's a message (IMO). You should listen because it's good!!

It's true that metal isn't usually (explicitly) political, unless nihilism counts as a political position. But there have been some notable exceptions, like Operation Mindcrime and ...And Justice For All.

I always confuse them with another power metal band linked to Fates Warning who I can't currently remember the name of. I don't know them but they've got a very respectable discography. I wonder if this would be somewhere to start with power metal.

This is blatantly wrong, musically punk and metal are distinct entities with different fan bases and aesthetics. While there are many bands which mix the two on both sides of the fence, the punk you posted is mostly as relevant and on-topic as The Beatles are.

For something more relevant would be sludge metal which is inspired by both metal and punk, for example.

I'm not sure the statistics on this, but most of the metal in my music collection is not overtly political. That said there are more than a handful of political bands, even entire subgenres when you consider ridiculous things like national socialist black metal.

Nice to see you in the thread, CT. I saw these guys a few months ago in London. Their music isn't anything that interesting [to me anyway] but they're getting a lot of attention because there's money behind them, and I find that interesting. I spoke to their manager who's bankrolled the whole enterprise, poured cash into them and as a result they got a lot of shares on social media. The venue I saw them at - The Underworld at Camden with a capacity of 500 - was sold out for a Mongolian metal band - it makes no sense on paper, especially when you consider the majority of people there were not metal fans. A friend of mine and I, during our promo stint in the 2000s, only managed to sell out that venue once for Riverside - but Epica, no, Xandria, no, Fates Warning, no, Orphaned Land, no. But these people? Just shows you the power of social media.

I would say the same is true for me, to a large extent [but not entirely]. Most of the [metal] stuff in my CD collection is gothic/progressive so the lyrics focus on sorrow/fantasy/nature.

I think I'm going to have to create a Spotify playlist for this thread and people can submit tracks as and when here [I think entire albums will fill it out too much and make stuff easier to miss]. I'll post a link to it in the OP in the next couple of days. I'll listen to this one later and give feedback - at work at the moment.

And it's not their best album, that would go to Skelepht, which I would encourage you to listen to. I originally found black metal very hard to get into, mostly because I found it pretty boring. My entry album was Paracletus by Deathspell Omega. Once I heard this and got on its level, little else was impenetrable and I started to appreciate the genre more overall.

Yes, it would - the other stuff you posted, no. Do have a re-read of the OP which I will update again while I still have the chance. In order to keep things on topic it's best to only count bands listed on Metal Archives. That would include Stryper, though not the other stuff. I haven't heard Stryper myself, but will check them out now and will add them to the playlist later. Metal Archives tend to be pretty strict, but I think for a thread like this we are going to have to have some kind of guideline otherwise it will go all over the place. And anyway, MA have over 130,000 bands listed currently, so it should be enough for now.
