Metal music thread

This is an experiment born from a few posts in the main LQ music thread. It may work, it may not, but either way, I felt the topic was worth addressing in its own thread. OK, so we already have a music thread on LQ, why do we need a specific one for metal?

For two reasons - firstly, it seems that on Linux fora there are quite a few metal listeners who don't discuss their tastes without particular reason, also, the discussion in the previous thread from last weekend could have gone on longer, but I personally didn't want to clog up the thread and alienate other posters with post upon post about it.

Thirdly, and I suppose that this counts as a valid reason as well, metal music - like classical, like folk, like electronica - has a multifarious array of subgenres, and exploring those in any depth is probably best done properly in a dedicated topic.

The albums that started this whole thing off in the last thread [with thanks to orbea and descendant_command] are:

A final point - metal is an extremely inclusive genre, that is to say, if you're not familiar with it, you will be welcomed into the fold in no time [as a follow-on point, I would recommend the first six or so albums from the small list above as an example of some starting points, rather than the last four albums]. Secondly, this thread is not existent to say that people who listen to metal music listen to metal exclusively, many metal listeners also listen to an array of other music from all over the spectrum. A lot of metal listeners are surprisingly open-minded [e.g. I was quite amused when having a drink with Mick Kenny from Anaal Nathrakh to find that one of his favourite artists was Madonna].

This thread can also be about metal culture, artwork, scenes, live events, literature, history, anything related. It would be interesting to see who else listens to metal music here on LQ - or who is interested in it - and to see what ideas/recommendations can be shared.

Criteria:

This thread is for the discussion of heavy, doom, NWOBHM, gothic, progressive, power, thrash, black, death, folk, viking and avant-garde metal. If you are not sure that your recommendation/band of discussion fits, please search Metal Archives to see if the band is in their database. If it doesn't belong in Metal Archives, it doesn't belong here either.

Playlist:

We have a LQ Metal Music playlist on Spotify. Any metal track posted in the thread will get included [or not, if a poster so desires]. If an album is posted here, the most popular Spotify track from that album will be listed unless the album poster specifies otherwise.

Ah yes, I forgot, weren't we discussing the new Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult? One of the best black metal releases this year, in my opinion.

One of my good friends got me into metal. Not my main favorite genre, but I like it. I'm kinda partial b/c I am a bassist/guitarist so anything that puts heavy emphasis on guitar/bass musical ability I'm all for.

Some of my favorites include: Rush, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Tool, and Iced Earth.

Lorengard's "Eve of Corruption" album is one of the last to become a favorite of mine.

I just can't do metal..some are interesting, most artistic but it tends to be too slow and most importantly not overtly political.

Germany_chris, your post took an interesting turn when you edited it after a few hours! There's some stuff in there that I haven't really considered and a lot of people who are into metal wouldn't have either. Metal which comes from the punk side - such as rap metal, alternative metal, nu metal - has always occupied this outsiderish No Man's Land in comparison to the more accepted genres like heavy metal, death, gothic, black, doom etc. On reflection, I'm not sure why this is since metal was originally about protest and anger release, and it shares a lot with punk in that way, which makes one or two of your links relevant [and others not]. I think it's probably because most people like their metal to be dark and/or melodic and neither can be said for a lot of alternative/rap metal.

That's not to say that bands like RATM don't deserve their place in the annals of metal history, they certainly do. The Eminem links are not relevant to metal though, apart from as a passing reference.

I honestly didn't take you as a "metal music" fan Lysander.

Personally I don't really care what type of music it is - a good tune is still a good tune in my book ;)

Neither RATM or Eminem or most of that punk have anything to do with metal and posting that shit here is kind of insulting. Its why I usually don't post about metal on non-metal forums.

I think it's about fan sets. I don't know if that's a term, I just made it up, but I'll tell you what I mean.

Metal fans, as I'm sure you know [but I say this for the benefit of others too], exist trans-subgenre, that is to say, they are not normally fans of just gothic metal, just doom metal, just black metal [bear with me here]. It's quite normal for their tastes to overlap across many such subgenres. However, normally they keep within a certain wide set which includes all or some of the above and more such as death, thrash, viking etc. Rap metal, nu metal and the like are generally NOT part of the same set, and are mostly appreciated by fans of other extraneous genres such as hardcore, punk etc etc. Likewise fans of hardcore, punk, etc etc do not tend to appreciate genres from the other gothic/death/doom/folk/black/whatever set.

As a general comment to the forum, for the purposes of clarification, it would be good if this thread could focus on the more traditional metal genres such as heavy, doom, NWOBHM, death, black, gothic, progressive, folk, power, viking, avant-garde etc. That would keep the thread on-topic, focused on recommendations, and not threaten a derailment about alternative/nu metal and its influences [e.g. rap music]. I'm sure there is plenty of literature on that outside of this thread.

On your Freedom Call rec orbea, I'm sure I saw them live a few years ago in the Purple Turtle in London. Power metal is not something I've personally ever really been able to get into, I think the closest I got was some of Symphony X's earlier stuff.

orbea 11-06-2019 09:46 AM

I think its a basic courtesy that if someone was going to make a punk thread I would not go and post this there.

I can understand if someone is not entirely clear on what is and is not metal, but consulting with the database at metal-archives should greatly help. By large their database is the best there is for metal.

I also don't listen to much power metal, but when done well I can be a big fan. This one is a great combination of power/doom.

Another artist I don't know of - one to listen to later today. Thanks for reminding me about Metal Archives, OP updated.

Me metalhead. Always surprises people IRL to find that out. I'm clean cut, not a single tattoo, no piercings. But in my youth was ALWAYS going to all the metal concerts and was one of the first into a mosh. Nowadays I rarely go to concerts, but still love the music. Mostly into speed/thrash metal. Also a fan of punk, for the same reasons. I don't like slow music, regardless of if it's classical or metal. If it's not uptempo, I'll turn it off (so I actually don't like most of the list given, I'll listen to country music before goth, tooooooo slow for my tastes).
