Longhorn Cancelled
 

Just off the wire, $MS has cancelled Longhorn and to be replace by Vista , which is
to be released soon

Actually, Vista is supposed to be the product name (Windows Vista) for the Longhorn project. Longhorn was just the internal development name.

Yes, will something tells me that $MS drop the Longhorn name because they can't deliver it.
Will it be a glorified XP, Linux is moving so fast that $MS has got to get something out there to
buffalo the public, just like $MS style.

Rather than dropping Longhorn (the internal name), they've added Vista (the name that will be on the package).

It's like Fedora Core 4's development name was (and is) Stentz.

I understand where your coming from, but do you remember when WindowsME came out, in reality it was really Windows98 3rd edition.
We will just have to see what File System type they use in Vista.

OK. Stop using the word 'both' when you refer to Longhorn and Vista, you will confuse people (including yourself). They are one an the same!

One name is the development 'code' name the other is the commercial name.

It's like saying that Bill Gates got dropped out of the Microsoft board and was replaced by William Gates III !

Windows codename Longhorn / real name Vista is due out end of 2006. I actually have several builds of it, nothing really exciting. Most of the features Microsoft planned on implimenting won't even be in the final product. By that time it's rumoured Apple's next release should be due which will see them migrating fully to x86. But don't fear, KDE 3.5 is in development and next year (also rumoured) we'll see KDE 4.0 which should be breathtaking.

Anyways, I'm a Gnome user hehe...

Windows ME!!!!????? Speak not of that repulsive OS! 3 years with that piece of &*^%!

They claimed that Longhorn would re-invent the PC desktop, but most shots I saw just looked like a slightly downgraded KDE.

I was kind of hoping that the Longhorn kiddie will post some reviews. ;) But I guess he's gone now.

There was a news story a while ago that said QT had been ported to Windows, so KDE would soon be available as a GUI on Windows as well.

Did anything ever come of that? Not that I like KDE much, but it'd be better than XP if it meant multiple virtual screens :)

I think it would be more apt to call it Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Nearly all the new and 'interesting' features had been cancelled.

I don't know what they've been doing with themselves but they will have had 5 years to get this new verison ready, WinFS is only a database indexing all the files on the hdd, the actual filesystem is still to be NTFS - how can they not manage to implement that in 5 years?

I can see blackcomb being as big a dissappointment again. It is already rumoured to have changed from having server and home/pro or client versions to just server versions.
