Theres a freeware third party app that will do that, I think its called VirtuaWin

Actually, Vista is supposed to be the product name (Windows Vista) for the Longhorn project. Longhorn was just the internal development name.
Yup. For anyone who's interested, Wikipedia has a list of codenames for past versions of Windows and other MS products:
Microsoft codenames

Will it be a glorified XP, Linux is moving so fast that $MS has got to get something out there to
buffalo the public, just like $MS style.

Jim

I have to agree that Linux is moving fast, but also it has a lot to do with the fact that Apple has released Jaguar, Panther and Tiger in the past three years and we have not seen anything from M$ since XP was released. M$ is feeling a lot of pressure from Apple (and LINUX) especially since Apple is moving to the Intel platform. They have more than than the Linux threat to look out for now.

I agree.
You know what M$ problem is?
They have so much staff, but nothing for them to do;). Anyways, I think win 98SE was the best of all the releases M$ has had, they just add more junk to it, and now they have this wonderful creation called Vista...
BTW, will that be "M$ Vista Windows" or "M$ Windows Vista"?
Hasta la Vista baby!...

You can run other desktop / window manager in Windows. Off the top of my head, blackbox is available for Windows:

Works just as well. Now, excuse me KDE lovers (I know you are not), but I'd choose Windows interface anytime over KDE. KDE just has to be the prettiest and slowest environment I've ever used. I'd always choose performance and stability over eye-candy, and eye-candy, instability and slowness is what KDE is all about. It feels more stable then Gnome, however...

Nope, actually every MS-DOS based system MS did was crappy(95, 98 and ME. Win 3.1 is not even an OS imho). They actually used DOS to keep backward compatibility. However, every NT-Based OS they did (WinXP and 2000) are way superior Operating Systems in terms of user management, stability and security. Can't understand how you got there where 98SE was the best one ^_^.

sundialsvcs 07-25-2005 06:10 PM

It might be more accurate to say that Apple, and certainly Linux, can do it faster. It simply does not work for Microsoft to put out a press-release, "X" years ahead of time, and promise people "how good it's going to be" and expect them to actually sit and wait for it.

Either:
  • They don't really need it anyway, or ...
  • Linux has already done it! :D
"It's gonna be called 'Windows 2006' or 'Windows YQ' ;) ... and it's being released in year X+2 from the previous release, right on time ... and what more is there really to be said about it?" (yawn...) That "Longhorn" is just another bull.

mickeyboa 07-25-2005 06:43 PM

That's the crazy part, people will wait for it.
And the American people are the idiots that will wait and pay for WindowsXP release pack 3, because Vista will
still be The NTFS filesystem that is WindowsXP.

Hmm well I always thought Win2k was pretty solid, heh I have an MCSE even and that's what I studied on :/

scuzzman 07-26-2005 01:47 AM

I was always more of a Win2kPro person too.
As for virtual desktops, MS has a tool that will do that. See Windows XP Power Toys.

oneandoneis2 07-26-2005 03:29 AM

Sadly, VirtuaWin can't install on my work PC, and the "Windows Power Toy" is just a joke. . . Ah well, maybe Vista will have decent virtual desktops :)

Firn 07-26-2005 03:44 AM

I like the new name, it sums everything up nice:
Viri, Instability, Spyware, Trojans & Ads.

But we'll see, the wait was long enough for Microsoft to develop something decent, so personally, I'm quite curious to see how much new toys it has.

oneandoneis2 07-26-2005 03:54 AM

None. They all got delayed, or are being rolled back to XP.

Sad, isn't it?

Love the Vista-as-acronym tho ;)

Charred 07-27-2005 02:12 AM

I have witnessed three degrees of separation between the Win OSes mentioned in this thread:
Win98, crufty->WinXP, crappy
I don't expect this to change any time soon, even if longhorns are on the vista.

About the virtual desktops : oneandoneis2, if you have an nVidia graphics card, I believe it's possible to have multiple desktops using the software that's included with their drivers ...
