In 2-3 weeks I'm completely Windowless.

Changing my distros more often than my socks (phew!!). Just tried the new Debian-Installer - download debian-installer.exe to Windows, double-click and your off, a lot slower than burning CD's and installing, but I like the idea of being able to install GNU/Linux from Windows - using MS against itself. Ubuntu have a similar thing, they were first.

i just moved to linux completely....cudnt be happier.

What do you use in place of something like Photoshop. I am not windowless primarily because of Photoshop.
I use it to resize, touch up and create text graphics (banners & such). I there software that will do that on Linux?

DotHQ, the two most popular would probably be The Gimp and Inkscape.

Spoke too soon about debian-install being OK, was at first, now can't get a terminal amongst other things - the busy indicator shows up, performs for a minute, then goes off - and whatever I wanted doesn't appear.

Back in action with ZenWalk 4.2 (Slimline Slackware).

98% windows-free.

Working on a puppy installation, and I think I've convinced mom to abandon windows at home. I might get a copy of 2000 just to keep playing some games.

I find this extremely amusing! I'm most likely the only Microsoft employee on this board and one of the few who aren't dependant of it's solutions in any way! :p
All I use Windows for is staying on scene, thanks to my work.

Re:- Completely sans Windows. I've dabbled and dabbled with various distro's getting further away from the MS dependency. Even the wife uses Mandriva for her email and word processing... but! .. there are things I cannot get around... watching DVD's for instance. Kaffeine won't play pre-recorded DVD's and I've tried installing Oggle (failed).
Can someone advise me how to get a DVD player into Mandriva 2006?

bartonmain: Version 2007 Of Mandriva comes with LinDVD installed by default.

If you want DVD playback with 2006 set your sources using site http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ then load the win32-codecs & libdvdcss2. This should get xine to play your dvd's. At least thats how I play dvd's. Lindvd dosen't work to well with dual monitors so I use xine.

Windows-free for 5 1/2 years. Started with Traktopel. Okay...so I use it when I go to the library to look up a book on the catalogue. Hopefully if I ever have a job where I have to use Windows I will be able to figure out how to use it.

Despite all the "happy linux users" I couldnt get to that happy part. my greatest problem is MAYA. Linux NATIVE MAYA !!! I havent experienced so much crap during my Windows sessions. From cursor artifacts, spontanious exiting (no, it did not asked to save my 3 hour work!), to mysterious freezes when MMB used to 'drag' stuff around.... Half the time I used to work, Im knee deep in system settings debugging all impossible crap imaginable. After 4 months of this 'fooling around', Im seriously considering to go back to windows to catch up with the schedule (gues why: no crashes!)...

In fact, right now I came here seeking help on another fine stuff maya produces. This time is my other distro (CentOS 5), which I considered absolutely fault-proof in these terms (it IS a clone of RedHat after all). Unfortunately (as an artist) I dont have a bunch of skilled programmers at my disposal to solve this kind of stuff over night.

So where IS my PRODUCTIVITY when HALF the time I have to solve absolutely trivial stuff ??!! (after 3 months tweaking, completely not aware of what I might be doing, im REALLY pisssed!!!)

But on the other hand: the 1st impression with SUSE 10.2 was very positive. Just like neighbours ferrari, or my friends's iMac with its ever-cool MAacOS X. "It is nice..." (...to look at! But not to manage it!) I hope you got my point on this.

(Now where did I put that WinXP CD....)

If Linux can't do what you want, go back to Windows.

If there is no Linux equivalent software *cough*
and you can't get it working properly under Wine (or similar),
and you need to use it to produce income,

then you'd have to be "puffin' muffins" to not use Windows.

There's a phrase which often come up in these discussions: "Use the right tool for the job." If Linux isn't the right tool for you in your application, then there's no point trying to fit a square peg in a round hole...
