I heard that you can now go to http://www.cnn.com it was banned since day 1 and like a couple of month ago. Can you guys to go to http://www.google.com ?

bxb32001 10-15-2002 10:14 AM

Wow!!! Finally CNN!!! Google you can, but a couple of searches, as well as websites are filtered/blocked... They seem to be able to block individual pages within sites as well... like the article in NYTimes I mentioned.

If you've been here for a while, you sort of get used to it... that is, until you decide one day that you'll give linux a try and find out that a site as useful for you as sourceforge has been blocked... More annoying is the fact that it did not used to be so.

[Sigh] Okay - considering everything else - what's happened around the world, WHY it's the way it is here, the things I have to do... it seems trivial, and in fact, I can do without.

But still I'm grinding my teeth...

neo77777 10-15-2002 10:25 AM

I believe you are addressing the problem to the wrong ppl, I bet [removed per member request] has an answer for you, but they won't tell you, this is a luxuary living in pro-communist country, everybody's the same except Government, whoever is in place of [removed per member request] there I am damn sure surfs the pr0n sites without any restriction:). And you know I am glad that LQ isn't banned there. Maybe the word "sourceforge" has a thretening meaning for a BB? Who knows, as I said the only ppl who have key answers probably are out of your reach. Is http://freshmeat.net dodging the Great FireWall?

bxb32001 10-15-2002 07:48 PM

Though I did ask for help, I also shared my views and frustrations... If I had enlightened anyone on the situation here then I am glad to have contributed to his/her awareness of how it is in the world.

The site is named 'Linux Questions' and implies it's purpose directly but you must consider the fact that Linux is not just about software or operating systems anymore - it is also a social movement... a reaction to the times, a sub-culture. As I have indicated in my previous post , I now have an idea why sourceforge was blocked. It's a site about software, yes, but it had encompassed a lot more, probably due to the same spirit that drives the Linux Community as well.

I do know that the root of the problem lies with the people who run this place but am I barking up the wrong tree? I think not. Problem solved, worked around, or not - I am comforted by the fact that someone out there in front of the terminal like I am heard me out and could visualize what it's like typing on my keyboard.

In my posts in this thread I have placed clues on what to read, what to type on search engines, what too look at, and how it is. You don't have to do a thing... but should you have the slightest itch, it is there for your curiosity.

Bottomline is: I had a problem and something that annoyed me about it, so I asked for help and whined at the same time.... that's all - therefore the post.

bxb32001 10-15-2002 08:08 PM

I have a small favor to ask neo7777, could you please take out all direct references in your last post about the country I'm in. I've tried to avoid any direct reference - I know that its obvious but til then it's still speculative. I wouldn't want them to block linuxquestions.

Please?

finegan 10-15-2002 09:14 PM

I don't think you have to worry about the name of the country you are in getting LQ banned, the amount of traffic they're nosing through is simply overwhelming to think about. This process of firewalling is most likely scripted for the most part, and due to the magnitude of the task the end blocked sites are probably largely random. In short:

Big Brother just can't watch that many packets, not for all the Sparcs in... well, you get the idea.

Anyway, what you're looking for is an anonymous proxy, they're not exactly something google pops up on the first page or two, but wheedle around and you can come up with something. There are also things like freenet (which is a sourceforge project). The rationale for banning sf is probably that its a source for software that gets people over the great wall, a lot of it, enough so that banning individual projects, and filtering over their search script would be a headache.

Did they get to freshmeat yet? Also, ftp.tux.org is a great mirror of nearly... friggin everything.

Cheers,

Finegan

Thanks for the reassurance... though it did take me a few hours to reply cause inexplicably, I couldn't get to LQ... and when it did load, I can get to anywhare else but this post.

Freshmeat's ok, though a lot of the software there is hosted in sourceforge...

Thanks for the mirror.

bxb32001, you might want to check out this site, http://www.multiproxy.org/. I think that there maybe an answer to your problem here. They block everything but the home page where I work.

bxb32001 10-16-2002 07:42 PM

Whoa! thanks.... I'll try it out later...

tangle 10-16-2002 11:11 PM

If you need anything else let me know. I might be able to set up something at school, so you can download somethings. I can't imagine how much it must suck to have someone tell you that you can't got to a website.

cli_man 10-19-2002 09:57 AM

I have also got a good amount of space and bandwidth I can use for mostly http transferrs but for a good cause I could host an ftp site. Email me if you need any software in it.
