Going through the great [fire]wall

I don't get it, I mean, I think I understand why the people running the place I'm in (my location) block the sites they block - but sourceforge? I used to be able to but one day - pfffft. Nothing.

I need help here guys (and gals). Any ideas on how to get through the great [fire]wall?

Sometimes using a third party browser, like www.anonymizer.com or something like that. It's not the best plan on earth, but it works for some people.

Chances are if it's your company blocking the site though, rather than your country/city, then they will have blocked most of the options to browse like that.

I'd say to talk to your techies and ask them why. You won't get in trouble, it's sf, not pr0n.

Cool

Maybe there open source haters :p

Garry :D

no idea why i said that hehe....

MasterC 10-15-2002 02:33 AM

ha ha ha, maybe because it's true

I don't know why anyone would block a site that provides things that SF does. I mean it's not just software, but information and a plethora of it.

It'd be like blocking google! Did they?

Anyway, you probably said it because to you and me, there is no good reason.

Cool

geeeeez open source haters.....the next thing they'll block is probably microsoft or something....maybe there Mac freaks hahaha.....stupid i am, yes stupid hahaha

Thanks.. I'll try it when I get home. Though I think anonymizer is blocked as well. Why sourceforge is blocked puzzles me, since they themselves advocate Linux.... But believe me, probably 90% of computers here are using winwoes - and 90% of those are probably pirated.

It's past midnight where you are Master C... still awake huh? Where i am it's almost 4:00 pm, and where GT I.N.C is... probably 6:00 pm...

Thanks again...

GT I.N.C 10-15-2002 02:59 AM

yep 5:57:p how did you know???

And why don't you try ringing up your company and sort it out...or maybe just make the switch to something else :p

Wow, good on time zones eh? Yeah, I don't have to work til 11 tomorrow, so I am hanging around the boards, hoping to help some late night strugglers ;)

I am about to hit the sack though, I am just about ready to fall asleep.

Cool

I work in a publications office of an International School... we churn out weekly bulletins and such...

You can probably visualize the room I'm in... paper all over the place AND ALL THOSE CLOCKS with times from different cities hanging on the wall... someone from Renton, Seattle in the desk in front of me, someone from Sydney sifting through a stack of pictures for this week's issue... :D

GT I.N.C 10-15-2002 04:08 AM

hahahha coool...sounds interesting....what kind of international school?

Garry :D

bxb32001 10-15-2002 05:33 AM

I dunno how many kinds there are, but the one I work in was founded by the U.S, British, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand embassies. You can find out more here.

bxb32001 10-15-2002 05:43 AM

just as I thought... anonymizer won't work

bxb32001 10-15-2002 05:59 AM

The'yve done a good job blocking stuff... even from the New York times article pertaining to this blocking and how to get around it. "Guerilla Warfare, waged with code" by Jennifer Lee...

GT I.N.C 10-15-2002 06:04 AM

Hmmmm is it your isp blocking it?? Or what?

Garry :D

bxb32001 10-15-2002 06:48 AM

[it's or what]

Let me clarify this my friend... check my location... ok, this means I am in that country... and here every ISP goes through THE ONE - [Insert country's name here] Telecom. So it won't matter.

Some of the embassies though, seem to be exempted from this firewall

If I am correct it was AT & [insert letter after 'S' here] that helped them develop the great f*ckin firewall that filters everything in and outta here...

I feel that the local Big Brother is watching. To what extent I don't know. They seem to be able to block something instantly like when I type 'freenet' on a search engine - that one they don't allow. but immediately after I type "quicktime", and nothing comes up... wait a few minutes though it will be ok. Some days seem better than others.

A friend of mine once found out their house was bugged... I think mine maybe as well.... (am I paranoid or what?) :D

Anyway... that is why I am looking for away around (or through) to sourcefourge. [Now to appease Big Brother] As I have said, I understand (I think) the rationale for this wall. BUT I JUST WANNA GET TO SOME FRICKN SOFTWARE!!!

I think I found why sourceforge is blocked - freenet.sourceforge.net ....

SIGH...
