activating Linux
i just installed Linux and i can't find the product activation code or 1-800 number anywhere. why does linux have to be so inconvenient? i think i'm going back to windows -- linux is just too hard. how are you supposed to use your computer if you can't even get someone to activate it for you?
hehehe :p :D |
I prefer using apt4rpm myself. With your nick, are you sure you aren't already using it? :D

that's funny, i could have sworn i posted it in the General forum.
anyway, thanks Fancypiper -- indeed i already am a big fan of apt-get and synaptic, and you are right that's where i got the nick. ;) actually i was making a small joke (though i have heard if you have to explain it it's not really a joke ;) ). i've never used windows XP, but apparently everytime you install it or upgrade your hardware you have to call M$ to "activate" your copy or else it will stop working. (LOL) i think you can also "activate" over the internet, and it sends all kinds of information to redmond, like the serial numbers of your CPU and hard drive, display and IDE adapter IDs, MAC address, etc. (and coming soon first born child's social security number, bank card PIN number, life insurance policy number, etc. rofl) it just struck me again this morning how totally absurd and Orwellian that is, so i was being a bit ironic in the post. hope i didn't waste too much of your time. :) |

Linux is a lot easier to activate all you have to do is send me $10... ;)
|
Ah, well if that's the case
then i'll activate it cheaper - only £5 (about $7.50) ono! regards John:D |

BTW, since the competition's hot, I'll activate linux for a BUCK ;) |

if you bought your computer with XP pre-installed, the reseller might have done the activation. if you are using a d/ld or pirated copy, the activation might have been cracked and disabled. |
try this command..
uname If it says "Linux" then it's already activated. It comes activated from the factory. :) |
Actually I thought is was funny but maybe I just have an odd sense of humor. I mean people say how easy Windows is and how difficult Linux is but clearly they don't take into account the many frustrations of Windows.

:D Actually. I think you have a sense of reality. I had a handle on Linux in less than a year after struggling with various Win flavors for 10 years.
I am amazed at the people that get hooked on Windows and keep throwing good money after bad. I was taught to fold my cards when I was dealt a bad hand. It makes sense to stop throwing money into the kitty on hope alone. I finally got a good hand and I am playing it for all it's worth. I'll raise you a week's uptime! |
