xf86config in Fedora

First, thanks for all of the great posts. I've been having issues trying to get Fedora up and running after running the updates and all of the problems that that creates.

Now I am trying to fix the last where X won't start. I'm trying to reconfigure X, but xf86cfg and it's variants aren't to be found. Am I missing something?

Help!

redhat-config-xfree86

OK, I had seen that somewhere else and when I try to run it, I get a black screen only. No config, no gui, no nothing ... other ideas?

You will want to make sure your video hardware is supported. Fedora doesn't have its own Hardware Compatability List yet but the one for Red Hat should be nearly the same.

I already did that. It was running until I decided to run up2date. That's when the problems began. I got it back running with gui, but the resolution was too low and the screen was unreadable. I tried to change my monitor to the correct one (the display adapter was correct from what I could tell), but I must have selected the wrong monitor. Since then, no gui. That's why I've been looking for the X config. I guess that I could take the advanced route and try editing the config file, but I'm not that comfortable yet. Oh well, what's the worst that could happen? No gui? I already have that. :chuckle:

Sorry :(

Try backing up the XF86Config file

mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/bak.XF86Config

then run redhat-config-xfree86

When you are currently starting the program it is using the current settings in the file which are messed up. This should let it get a fresh start.

got error message:
xconf.py: Fatal IO error (Connection reset by peer ) on X server :17.0.

very frustrating... but I do appreciate all of the help

Could you post the contents of the now /etc/X11/bak.XF86Config file?

I sure someone can help steer you through editing it.

As root and at a terminal

# XFree86 -configure
# XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new
If you see a blank screen with an X cursor, hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
# cp XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config

Reboot

Afterwards you can make adjustments from the "Display" gui

Jon-do:

tried that. didn't go. still had black screen.

Darthtux:

I didn't have anything on the box, so I killed it. I was too frustrated. Thanks for the help. I'll make sure that I don't run up2date for a bit.

darthtux 03-25-2004 07:52 PM

I can understand the frustration. I've been there a few times myself :-)

Please post the contents of the XF86Config file. Sometimes it is a simple adjustment to get it going. I've been there done that a few time too ;-)

Is there a XF86Config file in Fedora Core 2? I only found xorg.conf.

Wanna tried changing the refresh rate to 85 but afraid my MacroVIew monitor would reject. What would happen if the monitor cannot accept a refresh rate of 85Hz? Stuck at the black screen "console"?
