You have to close all windows and terminals pointing on /mnt/cdrom.

You have to close all the program that uses your CD-ROM, including file browsers.

If you are having trouble figuring out whcih process is using the cd...

/sbin/fuser </dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom1 or /dev/whatever>

Did you unmount the CD using umount /dev/cdrom?

what kind of work are you doing on the cd? are you burning?

i ask this because i have a philips cd burner, and when using cdrecord, i *must* use the eject flag, or the device has exactly the same symptoms you are describing when i try to remove a freshly burnt disc.
