I don't understand this obsession to login as root in the GUI.

Kind regards

Seems to me that the OP is using LQ only to get hits on his blog. No other contributing here from the OP has happened since the OP joined the forums, only links to his blog.
I doubt this is the way LQ is intended to work.

honeybadger 05-26-2011 01:27 PM

I think posts like these should be reported. Perhaps some mod may be able to explain the purpose of LQ to this guy/girl.

Done. Lets wait what the mods have to say about that.

Calm Down Guys

Hello,

Clam Down Guys... I have only posted those things which is related to Linux and Which should help to somebody who is beginner or who need this kind of Howtos right ?

There is nothing wrong in posting links if its valid, If i have posted invalid links or some marketing links then do tell me i will remove it right now.

When i was new to LQ I have posted links on my signature and all that and that time i was not aware of it and one moderator of the LQ sent me the instructions to not post the invalid, marketing or advertisements links so i am not posting marketing and advertisement sort of things right ? I am only posting which is purely related to Linux.

Let me clarify one thing here that I am not at all hungry about hits, Even no need to explain about the same.

networking.dept,

Excuse me, but you need to calm down & listen to these 3 members who have 11,183 posts between them. They are familiar w/ LQ culture & the LQ Rules; and, they raise valid issues.

Pending a review by the mods assigned to this forum, I have some questions of my own for you:
  1. Who is your employer?

  2. Who owns Ask4 IT Solutions?

  3. What is your relationship to them?

That's what my questions above are designed to clarify.

I didn't realize until after I made my previous post that I was the mod who did that. I find it interesting that even though I did not remember you or our conversation, I had roughly the same reaction to your blog site today that I did then.

Any posting of a link to one's outside blog raises the issue of the one's motive. Can't be helped.

networking.dept,

Knowledgable Linux security people consider your advice dangerous, that may partly explain the negative reaction to this thread.

TobiSGD,

How thorough an analysis have you done? Would you care to share it w/ me & save me duplicating your work?

honeybadger 05-27-2011 01:39 PM

@OP:- I come here to learn and understand linux. In a way this is my classroom and my peers are my teachers.
I hope you understand how frustrating I feel when someone posts something that is really irrelevant.
As far as your advice goes you acknowledged that logging in as a root in the gui is bad - and I think the same thing has been shouted from rooftops on this forum. If someone really wants to do something that is not recommended by the fedora guys and people here at the forum let them research things themselves. There are plenty of ways I can think about as logging in as the root (apart from the one that you mentioned). So in short what you are doing is giving bad advise hoping it would do good to somebody. Is that what your intention is? Comeon, grow up.
This forum is very lenient and accomodating. Some really great minds post here (not joking Pat the slackware mantainer posted here a few days back).
When someone of this strature speaks it is very annoying to listen to useless chatter. Hope you understand what I am saying.
And if perchance someone _really_ wants to log in as root in the gui all he has to do is ask and I am sure someone here would be more than willing to help.
Please dont misunderstand me I just am trying to explain to you what this forum is and what is expected out of you.

I have to apologize. I think I have clicked on the Find all threads started by ... link, instead of Find all posts by ... . This lead me to the wrong conclusion that all posts from networking.dept are promoting his blog. In fact, only in 6 of his 30 posts he shares links of his blog, the rest of the posts were made to help other members with their problems.

I apologize to networking.dept for my wrong blaming of not contributing here.
I apologize to archtoad6 and the LQ crew for causing unnecessary work.

archtoad6 05-29-2011 08:37 AM

TobiSGD,

I need no apology for myself. You raised a legitimate issue which I would like to see addressed.
As to networking.dept, I cannot speak on his/her behalf; but I hope that apology will be accepted too.

networking.dept,

I am still waiting for the answers to these questions:

Feel free to number your answers w/o having to re-quote the questions.

Thank you for your co-operation.

networking.dept 05-30-2011 04:49 AM

1) @archtoad6 and all members, I am extremely sorry if anybody doesn't like that i have posted links.

2) See for your all three questions i have only 1 answer. This is my website and i used to work as a freelance in India. Nothing else.

My Questions are as below to Mod :-

1) Can I post a shorten link instead of my blog links ? So Nobody feel that i am promoting my blog and i am hungry about hits.
Waiting for your answer

Sorry again to those members and moderators who doesn't like my posts with links, but i would say its just posted to help somebody who is really a beginner or like some quick howto's.

question to arch

Do you have a different solution to this topic?

I googled this question, and see your flames, not a rebuttal or correction or alternative.

If his answer works, who cares? It's free.
If it doesn't ... I expect to see a discussion.
Isn't that the spirit of Linux?

And ...if I want to login as root .... while a caution might be prudent ... it's my business, isn't it?

The current distro's are all taking away these things that made Linux what it was:

mine - to do with as I choose.

Like ... hiding and burying the power off button behind obscurely documented extra kays.
For my protection - or to enforce someone's idea of how it should work.
JUST LIKE MICROSOFT

If I should have that extra protection, I shouldn't be playing with Linux.
(Maybe I'm wrong ... it IS the gun that kills - not people. Hurry ... take away all the sharp knives. And Paper. Paper cuts are killers, too.)
