Debian And Its Packages

Hi:

I installed Debian 6.0.5 about 3 weeks ago and the system runs fine but there are a few things that seems odd to me.

When viewing my G-mail it is only in the text form and I am unable to see my G-mail background wallpaper(Ninja's).

Could Icewesel be missing a plug in?

When I installed Debian I only used the first ISO file and burned the 4 GB to the cd/dvd-
I do not know how big (GB's) Debian should be.
I'm asking how big Debian should be because after installing:
Code:

rkhunter
The terminal told me that it only found 130 packages out of 160. ( this is what has me wondering if pkg's are missing)

Is Debian missing packages? If so; is there a way for me to tell if packages are missing and what are they specifically?

Thanks in advance:study:

Hi,

please post the output of rkhunter (and the exact command you used to run it).

Evo2.

EDDY1 09-04-2012 11:28 PM

You have to enable non free repos by adding nonfree contrib in/etc/apt/sources.list
You have to install flashplugin.
Quote:

aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree

You can do this, but you do not have to.

Regardless, this post is off topic, the OP is trying to understand the output of rkhunter.

Re-read the OP, the first part of the post is about Gmail not working properly.

The second part is about rkhunter.

Use:
Code:

rkhunter --check
The output should end with something similar to:
Quote:

System checks summary
=====================

File properties checks...
Files checked: 140
Suspect files: 8

Rootkit checks...
Rootkits checked : 285
Possible rootkits: 0

Applications checks...
All checks skipped

The system checks took: 1 minute and 59 seconds

All results have been written to the log file (/var/log/rkhunter.log)

One or more warnings have been found while checking the system.
Please check the log file (/var/log/rkhunter.log)

Opps, missed that. Sorry EDDY1.
Does the gmail web interface use flash?

No problem evo2

When I first installed "rkhunter"I used Synaptic Package Mgr. I closed Synaptic and
I executed the following:
Code:

dpkg -reconfigure rkhunter
I was asked a series of questions that I answered 'yes' to. Than I executed:
Code:

rkhunter --propupd
The terminal produced this output:

Code:

[/CODE]

I have not ran:
<# rkhunter -c> as of yet since I installed this application a few days ago.

What should I proceed with?

evo2 09-05-2012 07:13 PM

Hi,

ok, so the message from rkhunter is about *files* not *packages*. I interpret that as rkhunter knows about 162 files that it will check, but your system only has 130 of them installed. This is not a problem. Debian offers around 30000 packages, most of which you will never want or need. Within these extra packages will be the additional 32 files that rkhunter knows about and would check.

Thank You; Evo-

You provided me with clear confirmation so now this is no cause for me to be alarmed.

Correct me if I am wrong but after the install of this application the terminal said:
Code:

rkhunter databases will be updated automatically by a weekly cron job
So; there is no reason for me to execute or run anything; right?

yep files, most likely from packages that are not installed. Nothing to be concerned about.

Code:

# rkhunter --propupd
[ Rootkit Hunter version 1.4.0 ]
File updated: searched for 169 files, found 140, missing hashes 7

I wouldn't even worry about running rkhunter, as it runs as a cronjob.

You can check the logs if you are one to worry.

as root open /var/log/rkhunter.log in any text edit or you can do
cat /var/log/rkhunter.log to look at it in a terminal

eight years of running Debian and none of the anti-malware tools like rkhunter have ever found anything.

Good for you. However, and with all due respect, such an observation is only meaningful in the context of your system(s). It is no measure for the amount of (ab)use inflicted slash seen on the 'net and people should not mistake such observations for security best practices to follow.

Got it; I can look in on that log by use of the terminal:

I hear you lound and clear concerning observation-

About that :
Code:

aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree
I executed the command as Eddy1 advised me to. For some reason I still don't have my wallpaper in my G-mail-
After I opened the terminal and executed:
Code:

apt-get update
So I than executed:
Code:

apt-get upgrade
I saw that all packages were updated by the terminal said:"Iceweasel was held back"
Is there something else that you could suggest?

EDDY1 09-05-2012 10:48 PM

You may have to update java, go to java website to see if it's working.

Ztcoracat 09-05-2012 11:10 PM

I went to the Java website and the only option there is to download Java.
I'm thinking just open the terminal and try:

Code:

apt-get update && apt-get install java
I checked in my add-ons in the Iceweasel browser; Java isn't in there-
Shockwave flash is in there.

I found:
Linux Download and Installation
There are two ways by which you can get Java for Linux

* RPM (Redhat Package Manager)
* Self Extracting Binary File

Linux RPM uses Redhat Package Manager to install Java. In order to use this method, RPM must be available on your computer. If it is not available, use the self extracting binary option.

The truth is I do not know how to "self extract binary file" option-
Have to learn how-

openjdk is in synaptic icedtea-plugin, it works for some but I always install Oracle java, but it has to manually be updated. If you try to install Oracle it will be easier to get it started if you install openjdk-jre firsr

I opened Synaptic and searched for jdk found it and installed it.
I closed Synaptic and re-booted; still all of my G-mail is in text and I don't have my background wallpaper.

Now install Oracle?

I have never had to install java to get gmail to work but i don't have a background wallpaper for mine so that may be a difference.

Squeeze has actual java and jdk packages available in it repositories. Wheezy and Sid have reverted to the openjdk packages though. I know for university I can use squeeze with some CMS (Content managment systems) that they use for online teaching but using Wheezy and Sid just wont work.

EDDY1 09-06-2012 01:31 AM

I myself prefer icedove for my gmail account maybe I should log into mine since I've never logged into gmail thru ff

Ztcoracat 09-06-2012 01:38 AM

Used Synaptic to 'mark' and 'install':

< sun-java6-jdk is installed >
<sun-java6-bin is installed >

Not sure what else to try-
Perhaps I should just be happy with what I do have and mark the thread solved.

EDDY1 09-06-2012 01:43 AM

It appears that my background is showing in gmail but to me the background is too much distraction for reading. Maybe OP is missing something.

EDDY1 09-06-2012 01:45 AM

Did you install icedtea-plugin?

evo2 09-06-2012 01:59 AM

Hi,

on my squeeze box the package is actually called "icedtea6-plugin".

Yeah I have the Oracle java 7

Neurial 09-06-2012 03:42 AM

I did not know that Java is needed for Gmail to display correctly.

It's not, or at least it displayed correctly for me wthout it.

Are you using NoScript or another extension in Iceweasel/Firefox that is blocking Javascript (Not Java)?

Gmail uses JavaScript not Java nor Flash.

Check your browser settings and extensions.

I looked in the 'add on's' in my browser and there is more than one JavaScript for me to choose:
JavaScript Debugger,JavaScript Debofufuscator, JavaScript options, JavaScript Deminifier, a few others and JavaScript Terminal. Not sure which one I need.

I checked in Extensions and I have Download Helper and Vimperator that's all.

I looked in the plug in in my browser icetea is not in there.
I also checked in Synaptic Pkg Mgr. and icetea is not present.

Hi,

as I stated earlier, the icetea package is actually called icedtea6-plugin.

Ztcoracat 09-06-2012 10:35 PM

Hi Evo:
The only options available to me in my Iceweasel browser in the plugin section are:
- Divx Web Player
- Quick Time Plug In 7.6.6
-Shockwave Flash 11.2 (enabled at the moment)
And VLC Multimedia Plug In 2.30.2

The 'icedtea6-plugin' is not in the list.

Would upgrading Iceweasel help?
I found these commands at: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=82397
Code:

apt-get update
apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel

Could Shockwave be creating a conflict? ..... it is currently enabled-

Hi,

on my machine:
Code:

% apt-cache policy icedtea6-plugin
icedtea6-plugin:
  Installed: 6b18-1.8.13-0+squeeze2
  Candidate: 6b18-1.8.13-0+squeeze2
  Version table:
 *** 6b18-1.8.13-0+squeeze2 0

    6b18-1.8.13-0+squeeze1 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main amd64 Packages

And confirmed here: http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/icedtea6-plugin

What is the output of "apt-cache policy icedtea6-plugin" on your machine?

Here's the output from my machine:

Code:

Hi,

that output tells me that you still haven't installed icedtea6-plugin package. So, if you want the java script plugin in your browser, you should install the package. Eg, as root
Code:

apt-get install icedtea6-plugin
And you may need to restart your browser for the new plugin to be loaded.

Executed like you advised:

Code:

root@mock:/home/ztcoracat# apt-get install icedtea6-plugin

Hi,

ok great it's installed now. Do you see it in the "about:plugins" page in your browser? Do you get the fancy backgrounds in gmail now?

Evo2.

Ztcoracat 09-06-2012 11:27 PM

Yes; it ( icedtea6) is in my plugin in my browser and it is enabled; however....
I do not have my fancy background wallpaper as I should-

Not sure what the problem is-:banghead:

evo2 09-06-2012 11:39 PM

Hi,

sorry, all I can say is that it works for me. I logged into the gmail web interface in iceweasel temporarily changed the background to a garish image.

Evo2.

craigevil 09-06-2012 11:43 PM

Try this mv ~.mozilla ~.mozilla.bak

then open iceweasel and try Gmail.

Or try it in a different browser, maybe Chromium.

It also wouldn't hurt to update Iceweasel using the mozilla.debian.net repo or backports.

backports has the esr version and mdn has iceweasel 15.

Personally I use Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Although I do have Iceweasel and Qupzilla installed they are rarely opened.

evo2 09-06-2012 11:47 PM

Hi,

regarding upgrading iceweasel, I think it shouldn't matter since the system I tested this on uses the stock Debian 6 iceweasel.
Code:

% apt-cache policy iceweasel
iceweasel:
  Installed: 3.5.16-17
  Candidate: 3.5.16-17
  Version table:
    10.0.6esr-1~bpo60+1 0
        100 http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports/ squeeze-backports/main amd64 Packages
 *** 3.5.16-17 0
        500 http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
    3.5.16-14 0
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main amd64 Packages

Ztcoracat 09-06-2012 11:51 PM

Craigevil:
Do you mean run:
Code:

mv ~.mozilla ~.mozilla.bak
( I might switch to Mozilla Firefox)

And I'm thinking about running:
Code:

apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel
What do you think?

evo2 09-07-2012 12:22 AM

Hi,

the mv command would be
Code:

mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.bak
The "apt-get install" line you posted should be fine, but as I wrote earlier, it should not be necessary.

Evo2.

Ztcoracat 09-07-2012 12:29 AM

;)Issue solved!

I now have the fancy wallpaper in my G-mail!

I opened the terminal and executed:
Code:

apt-get install -t squeeze-backports iceweasel
Shut down my system and re-started-

Happily reading my Gmail in fantastic graphics and color.

Craigevil; Evo and Eddy1; Thank You!

Hi,

did you actually restart iceweasel as I suggested after installing icedtea6-plugin?
If not, that could explain why it was not working.

Yes Sir; I did restart Iceweasel like you advised me. After I installed <icedtea6> by use of the terminal.
