OI! Debian like Debian,nothing special.
I downloaded the kfreeBSD and installed it on my laptop (compaq 615 amd X2).
So you have BSD with Debian installer,Debian desktop.
In work it feels Debian. It`s good but the only thing thad didn`t work for me was sound.I colud`t get sound to work!
But every thing else worked just fine.

one of things I noticed is that krusader cannot unmount usb flash drive..
that 'feature' has been in Debian testing for months, good to see stable is catching up :P

Kind of like it yet.

Are you sure this is a Krusader problem? If I am not mistaken, if the device is in use, Krusader doesn't unmount it, and remains silent. Can you unmount it as user in a terminal?
I am not behind a Squeeze machine now, but will try to reproduce later.

@jlinkels

yes, I'm sure its in Krusader. it complains something about 'hal'. only way it would "unmount" is to use saferemoval from icon on gnome desktop.
mind you, it hasn't been always like that. couple months ago some update introduced 'safe removal' concept to linux and broke unmount.

jlinkels 02-13-2011 05:04 PM

Weird.

I have this entry in /etc/fstab:
Code:

/dev/sdb1      /mnt/memstick  vfat    rw,user,noauto,gid=users,fmask=002    0      0
I mounted the USB drive as ordinary user on the command line. Unmount in Krusader was no problem. I have Krusader
Version 2.2.0-beta1 "DeKade"
Using KDE Development Platform 4.4.5 (KDE 4.4.5)

I don't have fstab entry for usb. It automounts in /media
Installer didn't make any.

Have to admit there are some very nice things about Debian. One of our servers is down so I started damnsmalllinux on Pentium3 with 128Mb memory. (not enough ram for puppy). We needed to run some specialized software on it. It was compiled in Debian and run there with no problems. But I was surprised when binary elfs just worked after copying from Debian to DSL. There was no need to recompile or anything. (even though DSL uses different kernel, iirc).
Also other binaries like rdate work simply by copying.

Did you try loading your sound driver with kldload?
Use aumix to change the volume (if needed).

They both(GNU/Linux & GNU/kFreeBSD) work very well for me.

qrange 03-03-2011 01:36 AM

another nice thing about Debian 6 is new 'sexy' font in terminal :)

It's a stable release - stop spreading fud and learn the facts. There is nothing to stop you getting the latest 2.6.37 from unstable or just downloading and building your own kernel if that's what you want.

Should stable release give me a "kernel failure" while making simple operation like copying files from network drive to USB flash?

Do you expect people to use their supernatural powers to guess what you were using and what you did wrong?

Not trying to be rude but my guess is you are relatively new to Linux altogether. Debian 6 (Squeeze) is similar in specification to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). The big difference between Debian 6 and Ubuntu 10.04 is that Ubuntu 10.04 come out with a mountain load of bugs and left alot of people wondering was it fixable before the next release.

If you want a newer kernel go to liquorix and install the latest 2.6.37 variety.

Try separating the issues a little bit. Ubuntu suffers from kernel failures as well infact all Linux distributions can suffer from them. It is, unfortunately, a part of Linux life but I'll bet my bottom dollar that Debian when set up correctly, and used correctly, wont suffer with them as much as a bling bling distro does.
