Open Source Game of the Year

What's your favorite Open Source Game?

--jeremy

Linux.tar.gz 01-13-2011 10:45 AM

Wesnoth. It's better and better. And better.
But all of them are great games...

sycamorex 01-13-2011 02:13 PM

Nethack - the more I learn about it the more quality entertainment it brings.

FredGSanford 01-13-2011 04:39 PM

Chess is about the only game I mostly play...

dugan 01-14-2011 08:32 PM

Ur Quan Masters would be my choice, but it's not on the poll.

X.Cyclop 01-15-2011 11:56 AM

I loved supertuxkart !

brashley46 01-16-2011 04:33 PM

Wesnoth yesterday, Wesnoth today, Wesnoth forever. :Pengy:

code933k 01-16-2011 11:44 PM

Nice things around there but I don't know what happened between you and the Urban Terror developers Jeremy :D This is another year without one of the finest OpenSource games listed here.
By the way check out QuantZ for Linux, sorry for the propaganda, but it is the first game I did want to buy in a long time.

Greenfuse 01-17-2011 04:20 AM

Could you add Glest / Megaglest please?

There it is - thanks

mlangdn 01-17-2011 05:47 AM

I had been wishing for a poker game for a long time. I got my wish with Pokerth.

bbneo 01-17-2011 06:49 AM

Is World of Goo a candidate?

I guess you have to pay for the full version... very professional. Nice to have in the Linux world. My kids enjoy it.

mythcat 01-17-2011 07:13 AM

Savage

Add this game "Savage" on poll.
What is Savage?
Savage is a Real Time Strategy Shooter (RTSS) that takes place on Earth millions of years from now, well after the fall of all known civilization. Working in a non-persistent online environment, Savage will combine all of the action that gamers expect from a first-person shooter and all of the challenge that real-time strategy fans demand.
See some screenshots

My favorite of all times:
Urban Terror !

The Urban Terror site seems to disagree with you about it being Open Source, which makes it ineligible for this category:

Quote:

This means the game code (the .qvm's in zpak000.pk3) are closed source and can only be distributed electronically over the internet, not on cd or dvd. The non-code data files of Urban Terror (zpak000-assets.pk3) can go on any medium however. The full license texts come with the installer, they outweigh the information provided here.
If this is old or outdated data and Urban Terror is now Open Source, please include a link.

Would it be possible to add Neverball to this list? I find it to be a nice, simple, well-polished FOSS game. :)

jeremy 01-17-2011 10:02 AM

MegaGlest has been added.

--jeremy

jeremy 01-17-2011 10:07 AM

World of Goo and Savage are not Open Source.

Neverball has been added.

Joshun 01-17-2011 10:57 AM

OpenTTD is a cool game. And it is now fully open source, including graphics and sound.

Vi3GameHkr 01-17-2011 10:58 AM

I actually tend to enjoy playing Scorched 3D every once in a while. I particularly like the way it has taken a classic DOS game and turned it into a (somewhat) modern 3D game.

Thanks for replying Jeremy. My bad for using the term "Open Source", I meant 100% free and GPLd as for the engine.

Check out point 2 in the listing (out much does it cost) and 4 (do I need Quake arena to play).

It is very well supported for Linux and I think BSDs fall into this category as well. Mods are possible. And even they have to conform to Frozensand's EULA, stating no commercial derivatives.

The engine is free as in freedom for anyone to fiddle with. Although the game itself is not fully floss, I'm grateful to them for supporting our *nixISH platforms. Your call, and thanks again for taking the time to reply no matter if you include it or not.

Cheers and best wishes.

jeremy 01-17-2011 06:59 PM

Game engines are not eligible for this category.

MithrandirAgain 01-17-2011 10:21 PM

PokerTH. An incredible program.

danos_p 01-18-2011 02:13 AM

That's exactly what crossed my mind when I read that answer!

Anyway, I just have to say some words which make baby Jesus cry to find the delete account button at last.

Where's 0 A.D.? I know it is in simple alpha stage, but it has to be my favorite game ever I play in spare moments... :)

eveningsky339 01-18-2011 09:26 PM

I'm stuck between Wesnoth and Oolite... Since Oolite isn't in the poll, I pick Wesnoth.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Goes Open Source
Written by badman on 13 August, 2010 - 10:18 | TaggedWolfenstein: Enemy Territory
During his annual QuakeCon keynote speech last night, John Carmack mentioned that the full Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory source code is now available under the GNU General Public License. This is great news for aspiring modders looking to use the game's innards as a basis for their own project, as well as community-driven improvements for Wolf: ET itself. An official, potentially press release-laden announcement is apparently still to come, but in the meantime, you can grap the source from one of the mirrors below

They have open sourced the game engine, not the content of the game, so the game itself is not open source, the graphics, sounds, and whatnot are still copyrighted. You can download the game for free and use it, but you are not allowed to make use of the content of the game for other purposes, like a real open source game would allow.

Paweł 01-19-2011 08:10 AM

Sorry, my mistake. Please for give me that, but I'm newbie in Open Source world

Skype is in the "Messaging App of the Year" category, where this is no requirement to be Open Source. This is "Open Source Game of the Year".

mariuz 01-22-2011 08:54 AM

Game of the year is Xonotic

I think it should be added , it does have impressive graphics (new hight res textures) and open source community type of management :)

http://www.xonotic.org/media/xonotic-screenshots/

jeremy 01-22-2011 09:13 AM

Xonotic has been added.

Wesnoth forever!

Three years ago, Battle for Wesnoth (along with applications like Firefox, VLC, OpenOffice and Thunderbird) showed me what can open source software achieve, so it was instrumental in my conversion to Linux. And it's still getting better and better!

Jourdin 01-25-2011 02:44 PM

Torcs, it's the perfect mix of quick play, tournament, endurance and really good sim. GO TORCS! :)

coralfang 01-28-2011 11:25 PM

How could you miss cube2: sauerbraten!
I play that game every single day, gotta be the best fps shooter on *nix (not to forget the co-op map editing mode)

its awesome.

Sayan Acharjee 01-29-2011 02:27 AM

Is there any racing games available? Please suggest some names. :)
