I've hopped a few distros, learned a bit about what I like. Then I made a list of requirements of my ideal distro. Lo and behold, it exists. So I know the best is what I run without having tried every OS from the list (it's not even on the list but "Debian" will do).

the "NOW" Ubuntu is the best

I've been using Ubuntu since introducing version 5.04
and I can say, the differences happened are really interesting
and worth mentioning......
aside, this WINE application has let me not to use windows that often
and sure, about the security, Ubuntu, the Linux O/P I use.... is really wonderful
the desktop, I like, the colors, more than 1 workspace make it easier to use, ease of use... amazing
now, I can do all, with a heart of steal
yes, "some" are not activated under Ubuntu/Linux still, but as I see, all will be activated soon

Looks to be dead Jim, all the Devs left with Shingledecker if I understand correctly. (used 2.2 - 3.x, hated the 4.x stuff)

sidux gets better and better every year . . taming debian sid . . no need for reinstalls with every new release . . but it's not on the list

gcy 02-04-2010 05:26 AM

Desktop of the year

This poll is a bit stupid. We are not comparing like with like. I use gentoo myself, but would not recommend it to a beginner. For him/her, Ubuntu would be the best. It all depends on the use one wants from the computer.

Why am I a LQ newbie? I was using linux before Linux Questions existed

raju.mopidevi 02-04-2010 05:30 AM

I recommend ubuntu for the users who just shifted from windows. and wants windows like system.

for an experienced user, wants to do some thing practically to the existing i recommend openSuSE.

hornerm 02-04-2010 05:54 AM

PCLinuxOS

jack lee 02-04-2010 06:54 AM

Slackware 13.0, that's my vote.

jeremy 02-04-2010 10:22 AM

gcy, notice that it say LQ newbie, not Linux newbie. The user titles are explained here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...faq#faq_newbie
