Browser of the Year

What browser do you prefer when browsing LQ?

linuxlover.chaitanya 01-07-2009 11:29 PM

Chrome's available on Linux?????

vermaden 01-08-2009 02:33 AM

I would also add Midori (webkit/gtk2 based) and Arora (qt4/webkit based).

About text based browsers w3m is a must here.

Mark7 01-08-2009 03:29 AM

Kasehakaze?

nope, but I wouldn't vote for it even if it were.

I vote FF, not because it's good, but because of the extensions.

If Chrome's not still there for linux then why is it there on this list? Just because its open source? Not fair till its ported to linux.
I already voted FF. Thats the only one that I use. Its good its safe and has got a lot of extensions.

mjjzf 01-10-2009 01:50 AM

Firefox, but looking very much at the Midori development. Interesting.

jeremy 01-10-2009 10:06 AM

The builds are currently available for Linux and have been for a while (although they are not fully functional). The pending 2.x release should being a functional version and will be available soon.

I keep Opera for those websites that are such a mess that Firefox won't display them; I used to use Konqueror for that, but I really find all the KDE stuff too cluttered and clunky. For normal use, it still has to be Firefox.

Electro 01-11-2009 01:44 AM

This one is hard for me to vote because only mplayerplug-in works in Firefox. On the other hand, Opera handles Flash a lot better or does not crash. Even though I use Firefox for almost every site, Opera has made a lot of changes in 2008. Opera has provided some resilience to a Flash crash and no more ads, so I give my vote to Opera.

Alien_Hominid 01-11-2009 02:17 AM

People should try Opera 10 alpha. Way faster and better than 9.

jay73 01-11-2009 04:21 AM

Firefox. Let's hope for Mozilla that Chome does not take off; it is hard to imagine that google will continue as major sponsor if their browser becomes a hit.

allend 01-11-2009 07:27 AM

Firefox 3 and NoScript addin does all I want in a no nonsense fashion.

eerok 01-11-2009 07:33 AM

I voted firefox ... it's what I use on all platforms. Anyway, I've used the mozilla stuff since the early netscape, back when it competed with mosaic, and it's always done the job pretty well.

divyashree 01-11-2009 12:10 PM

when chrome for linux will come ???

richs-lxh 01-11-2009 07:29 PM

Opera is the only browser.

FF and Iceweasel were crashmeisters last year, and Chrome?! on a Linux forum?! or is that just wishfiul thinking.

I tried it on both Vista and Xp............ then I installed Opera ;)

Maybe I can be a counterpoint :)

FF3/Iceweasel have worked for me all through the year.
If they didn't behave, I'd just twist their arms till they worked.
Have not had any problems since ;)

anticapitalista 01-12-2009 09:03 AM

I use 3 browsers:
iceweasel (firefox)
Dillo2
links2

jasohl 01-13-2009 12:56 AM

FireFox all the way. robust, and enhanced with awesome extensions...

halovivek 01-13-2009 07:23 AM

mariuz 01-13-2009 11:05 AM

i voted midori but i use 80% of my time arora

http://code.google.com/p/arora/

JMJ_coder 01-13-2009 02:44 PM

I'll be very happy when Dillo gets javascript and secure support fully working. But, links does everything I need (even the limited javascript I need). And it does render some pages better than lynx (which is my second favorite).

nauved 01-13-2009 08:30 PM

The addons/customization make Firefox the only one I use on a regular everyday basis. That said, I'm not happy with FF 3 and the "awful bar", places.sqlite etc. though I'll soon have to learn to live with it (still using FF2x). :(

murugesan 01-15-2009 12:23 AM

I use 3 browsers in the following sequence:
1) firefox
2) Web Browser, File Manager, ...
Konqueror 3.1.3-52 Red Hat

David Faure
Simon Hausmann
Michael Reiher
Matthias Welk
Alexander Nuendorf
Michael Brade
Lars Knoll
Antii Koivisto

Stephen Kulow
Richard Moore
Dima Rogozin

Torben Weis
Joseph Weninger
3) Mozilla 1.4
Mozilla/5.0

svalovic 01-15-2009 01:32 AM

Opera

I think Opera is best - you have web, mail, rss, irc in one application. But I wish it were GPL licensed...

vijayma 01-15-2009 01:58 AM

i use firefox on all platforms

remy215 01-15-2009 02:43 AM

Opera rules! you should give it a try

code933k 01-15-2009 03:32 AM

Vimperator

Long life to vimperator !! Dead to the mice !!

FredGSanford 01-15-2009 03:45 AM

Firefox & Epiphany...

linuxlover.chaitanya 01-15-2009 03:48 AM

I installed vimperator and now I do not know how to disable it. All the options are gone....

markush 01-15-2009 04:00 AM

I'm using firefox on all machines (and all OS) and like synchronizing my bookmarks with the foxmarks-plugin.

linuxlover.chaitanya 01-15-2009 04:06 AM

I do not know how but I somehow managed to disable vimperator and uninstall it as well. Thank god!

Just another case of you didn't RTFM ;)
Parhaps it wasn't for you anyway.

Yeah I did not like it. Just saw something here and wanted to give it a try. But wasnt very happy the way it works. The simple yet powerful and secure FF is good for me.

jordanwb 01-15-2009 09:16 AM

Chrome for Windows, Firefox for Linux. I'm not sure which I should vote for.

linker_85 01-15-2009 10:53 AM

I love Firefox

khronosschoty 01-15-2009 10:55 AM

I voted IceCat because its Firefox but instead of only being 75%75%-85% free its 100% free. After all whats the point of the Free Software Movement if we do not support 100% free software. Thats like buying somthing that is only 75%-85% Organic its all lies and deciet!

Club17 01-15-2009 10:56 AM

neither, all suckz, safari is #1 (sorry, but is the true)

BigVig 01-15-2009 11:07 AM

The browser I prefer to use when browsing these forums may or may not be what I would call the "browser of the year", whatever that means.

bulava 01-15-2009 04:45 PM

Firefox 3.0.x for all the OSes including Windows!

theriddle 01-15-2009 05:26 PM

First there was the Navigator.
Then there was the Explorer.

I use Konqueror. :P

webeyes 01-15-2009 08:40 PM

Firefox 3 on my desktop but Firefox 2 with my older laptops. So I voted for Firefox

jhigz 01-15-2009 09:21 PM

Opera is always first choice, and lately, test driving Epiphany

spdl 01-15-2009 09:37 PM
