I will assume that you have clicked on "System Settings" and then clicked on "printers". After clicking on "printers" my screen displays my printer "HP Officejet Pro 8100". If your screen does not display a printer, the quick assumption would be to (re)install your printer.

In my case, clicking on the printer displays a screen with a variety of options. "Printer Options" being the fifth(5) item down on the list displayed on the left side of the window.

In "System Settings" is there a printer icon between the "power" and "sound" icons?
Though it should not be necessary, is the printer "on" when booting?

Below is a post located in "AskUbuntu". That may help.
No printer icon in Ubuntu 14.04 system settings

No,there is no "printer" icon between the "power" and "sound" icons(in Sys. Settings).I tried the post you suggested with no luck. The system I'm working on is a 32 bit.The post is for a 64 bit.Printing and scanning works fine;but if I need to add a printer I'm dead in the water.

Ok.

Can you access the Ubuntu Software Center? Is so, type in the word "Printers". For me, the top icon displayed was "Printers" and it showed that it was installed. If it does not show that "Printers" was installed then that could be the problem,

Also try Synaptic Package Manager and type in "Printer". For me, a whole bunch of "Ubuntu icons" popped-up. You have to scroll down to see all of them. The problem with this approach is that if you don't have the names of all the packages required for the printer icon, you won't know which to install. Hopefully the install from the Ubuntu Software Center will work since it is only one download.

You may be able to add a printer through the command line if you can't get your printer icon back. I have not installed a printer through the command line.
This post may help: Installing a CUPS printer via the command line under Ubuntu.
Ubuntu Documentation: Lpadmin

I hope one these suggestions works in restoring the printer icon.

Thanks much.
