Ok.
Can you access the Ubuntu Software Center? Is so, type in the word "
Printers". For me, the top icon displayed was "
Printers" and it showed that it was installed. If it does
not show that "
Printers" was installed then that could be the problem,
Also try Synaptic Package Manager and type in "
Printer". For me, a whole bunch of "
Ubuntu icons" popped-up. You have to scroll down to see all of them. The problem with this approach is that if you don't have the names of all the packages required for the printer icon, you won't know which to install. Hopefully the install from the Ubuntu Software Center will work since it is only one download.

You may be able to add a printer through the command line if you can't get your printer icon back. I have not installed a printer through the command line.
This post may help:
Installing a CUPS printer via the command line under Ubuntu.

I hope one these suggestions works in restoring the printer icon.
