Ubuntu (KDE) running slow, & how do I uninstall GNOME?

for some reason my ubuntu (kde) distro is running very very slow... often if im running azureus it will crash, normal tasks like opening firefox will take more than 10 seconds and if i have multiple windows open, it will act slower than windows, here are my computer specs, im running the x86_64 version.

A8N32 mobo
2gb ram
AMD64 3700 2.2ghz (single core)

i dont think its my processor or ram... any ideas? windows ran smooth on it.

also, how do i uninstall GNOME?

Code:

sudo aptitude remove gnome-desktop

BrianK 03-12-2008 01:37 PM

what does top look like? what's the output of free?

IndyGunFreak 03-12-2008 02:57 PM

I've never gotten KDE to run at anything more than a snails pace, on any distro. Gnome, I've never had an issue w/. I know KDE is slightly more resource heavy, but I don't understand why I've had such issues with it.

YMMV.

to uninstall gnome you just type

Code:

sudo apt-get uninstall ubuntu-desktop

KDE is a lot slower than GNOME as there is much more to load in RAM (much more graphical)

AceofSpades19 03-13-2008 06:16 PM

If kde is so resource heavy then why does gnome run slower then it on my pIII?

hmm... your load average is low, your cpu use is low. maybe you just don't have graphics acceleration working? Do you have a graphics accelerator (like an nvidia card or something)? Have you installed the drivers & updated xorg?

beyond that, it's hard to say.. maybe your hard drive is on its way out?

ChootarLaal 03-13-2008 09:49 PM

i have a 8600gts evga, i dont know how to get the graphics acceleration working, how do i install the drivers and update xorg? any help would be appreciated.

unfortunately, it's non-trivial. That said, there are some pretty good, step-by-step docs. Just be sure to follow them to the T.

I didn't say my opinion was right/wrong, but I've tried KDE on several computers, all but 1 w/ reasonable speed, and they all sucked compared to Gnome.

Use whatever you like, you'll get no argument from me, the beauty of choice.... :)

Driver Problem Likely

You may need to check to see if your video accelerator drivers are installed, up to date, or even on. I use Gnome with absolutely no speed difficulties. Works as fast as my MS Vista at work.

ChootarLaal 03-19-2008 10:13 PM

thanks all, installed the drivers, everything is smooth now.

but is there a way to install drivers specifically for my video card? 8600GTS or is it going to say '8 series nvidia' and thats sufficient?

even on the nvidia website, there are not specific drivers for specific cards... it's a driver per family & the families are quite large. '8 series nvidia' is sufficient.
