still problem with wvdial on ubuntu 9.04
hello, i am a new member here. ofcourse became member to post my problem!
i have ubuntu 9.04. it doesnot allow netconnect cards. i know. i searched and found some links to help me out. i learnt that i first n eed to install wvdial. so i followed according to the following link http://acomelectronics.com/GeorgeVit...re_wvdial.html but still i am facing the problem. i changed the wvdial.conf file according to http://linuxondesktop.blogspot.com/2...onnect-on.html still i get following error in the terminal. ERROR himanee@himanee-laptop:~$ wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Warning: inherited section [Modem0] does not exist in wvdial.conf --> Cannot get information for serial port. --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Configuration does not specify a valid phone number. --> Configuration does not specify a valid login name. --> Configuration does not specify a valid password. plese help. |
The error is telling you is that you did not write in one or all of the three missing requirements: username, phone # of ISP, password in /etc/wvdial.conf
First it shows "Cannot get information for serial port", which suggests that you did not first after install run wvdialconf. I don't remember ever seeing "Warning: inherited section [Modem0] does not exist in wvdial.conf" This suggests that you have done something unusual, and not known to me. |
Thanks WilliamS,
i shall ensure once again that i have written all the information correctly. but i did run conf file after installing it. can you make any wild guess what mistake i would have done to get this type of warning?! regards, himanee. |
sorry i forgot to add one more thing. it detects the modem. when i run "sudo wvdial netconnect" then it connect then suddenly after afew seconds disconnects it again.

1. --> Cannot get information for serial port.
2. --> The PPP daemon has died: Authentication error. --> We failed to authenticate ourselves to the peer. 3. /etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: Can't write '/etc/wvdial.conf.tmp4601': Permission denied /etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: Can't write '/etc/wvdial.conf' ('/etc/wvdial.conf'): Bad file descriptor 1&2- Maybe wvdial has a compatibility problem with the modem? 3- /etc/wvdial.conf.tmp4601 is a new one to me, don't know how it could create a tmp file. I would try reinstalling wvdial and make sure permissions are OK at /etc/wvdial.conf - my practice is to install it as root and then use chmod +xs /usr/sbin/pppd to make it run as user (and a bunch of other chmods). For comparison, here's what mine does when I connect as user (note that it says nothing of the modem or port): $ wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Idle Seconds = 600, disabling automatic reconnect. --> Sending: ATDT8194497775 --> Waiting for carrier. This might mean nothing. |
