The error is telling you is that you did not write in one or all of the three missing requirements: username, phone # of ISP, password in /etc/wvdial.conf

First it shows "Cannot get information for serial port", which suggests that you did not first after install run wvdialconf.

I don't remember ever seeing "Warning: inherited section [Modem0] does not exist in wvdial.conf" This suggests that you have done something unusual, and not known to me.

Thanks WilliamS,

i shall ensure once again that i have written all the information correctly. but i did run conf file after installing it. can you make any wild guess what mistake i would have done to get this type of warning?!
regards,
himanee.

1. --> Cannot get information for serial port.

2. --> The PPP daemon has died: Authentication error.
--> We failed to authenticate ourselves to the peer.

3. /etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: Can't write '/etc/wvdial.conf.tmp4601': Permission denied
/etc/wvdial.conf<Warn>: Can't write '/etc/wvdial.conf' ('/etc/wvdial.conf'): Bad file descriptor

1&2- Maybe wvdial has a compatibility problem with the modem?

3- /etc/wvdial.conf.tmp4601 is a new one to me, don't know how it could create a tmp file.
I would try reinstalling wvdial and make sure permissions are OK at /etc/wvdial.conf - my practice is to install it as root and then use chmod +xs /usr/sbin/pppd to make it run as user (and a bunch of other chmods).

For comparison, here's what mine does when I connect as user (note that it says nothing of the modem or port):

$ wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Idle Seconds = 600, disabling automatic reconnect.
--> Sending: ATDT8194497775
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT8194497775
CONNECT 26400/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Thu Oct 1 14:35:00 2009
--> Pid of pppd: 3298
--> Using interface ppp0
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]
--> local IP address 142.217.218.235
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]
--> remote IP address 142.217.218.129
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]
--> primary DNS address 142.217.192.8
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]
--> secondary DNS address 142.217.192.9
--> pppd: hó·0[06][08] [06][08]

I'm using Slackware, and have never used wvdial netconnect, I just type in wvdial, but tried wvdial netconnect and it does the same as when I type in just "wvdial". This might mean nothing.
