How to install programs in home directory

I have a chromebook with ubuntu installed on the HD, which is only 8 gig. This is actually working very well but I am limited to how many programs I can install.

But I do have a 64 gig SD Card which my $HOME directory is mounted on and would make a great place to install programs. I looked over the apt-get man page and didn't find anything.

Is there some place with instructions on how to install programs onto the $HOME directory using apt-get or dpkg, or would I have to use source pkgs to build and install in the $HOME directory?

Thanks

you might be able to move part of your OS onto the SD Card by partitioning it to reflect same then changing your fstab to reflect said changes that way when installing to say /usr/bin it just goes to the SD Card instead of that little ssd thingy used for the system on same said laptop.

bind mount too may work.

Maybe something like this. https://askubuntu.com/questions/1936...ocal-directory

You might be able to use other means to expand space like LVM, Btrfs, ZFS and raid.

I agree repartitioning would be best. /usr on your SD card makes sense. Maybe you want to put even more on your SD card, considering 8GB isn't that much. Of course you need to temporarily store the files of your SD card somewhere safe while you do that.
If that's too much of a hassle, you could move /usr to your SD card and make a symbolic link to it.
You need to do all these things with your system off-line (e.g. via Ubuntu live disk). Also, you need a filesystem with POSIX access control on your SD card (e.g. ext4), if you didn't have that already.

the only thing you'll have to get use to is time, because of throughput direct access vs usb/SD Card interphase throughput is slower then direct access off motherboard.
