grub error 17
i installed ubuntu 5.10 b in a sys with win xp installed i created a 10 gb partition for ubuntu it is like
c d e ls ext3 f ls - linux swap and c is primary partition all others are extended partition ext3 where ubuntu is in all other partition is of windows. after ubuntu installation i booted to see grub listing all os and i booted in to win xp and converted my fat32 partition (d) to ntfs using partition magic it ask me for restart to compleat conversion process i done it but my screen is stuck with a message from grub that error 17 why this happened ( i know what error 17 is but explain me it in my case) is there is any way to repair this . i cant able to boot into any of my os i reinstalled ubuntu with grub and get things done but is there any way other than this please tell me. |
Sounds like what ever partition magic had to do in order to convert the fat32 colume to ntfs has made grub upset..
re-installing grub to the mbr on your hard disk would fix the error or like you said, re-installing ubuntu/grub .. Grub gets angry if any of the partition numbers change and the /boot/grub/menu.lst file does not reflect the change - or if another application (like part magic) mucks around with the mbr or the physical locations on the hard disk where partitions start/end. |
