Can't shut Down Computer Edgy Eft 6.10

hi all,

when i click on the red shutdown button in the upper right, i'm only given three options - log out, lock screen, switch user, suspend and hibernate.

the option to shut down the computer is not available.

i'm in the process of trying to set default session since i've actually installed kubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop on top of ubuntu-desktop.

bottom line, i don't know how to shut down ubuntu without a hard, hardware shutdown.

what should i do from here? any help is appreciated.

What happens if you choose "Logout"?

Mabe you have somehow managed to get X running on top of X, so just choose "logout" and you should be dropped back a level. Then choose logout again and you should find the shutdown option.

If I start X in an odd way (eg with startx at the commandline) then I do not get an option to "Shutdown", but "logout" will drop me back to the CL, and from there I can halt.

Once you have rebooted, or restared X, you should have a little menu on your login screen where you can choose which sort of session (KDE/Gmone/whatever) you wish started after you login.

i was able to get to the command line and "sudo halt", which shuts down the computer.

however, when i log in again (first time login, do nothign else), i do not have the option to shut down.

i get the kubuntu splash screen, but i boot into ubuntu.

At the login screen, before you login there is a small menu for you to choose which windowmanager you want to use.
If you can't see that, you need to set up your "login Manager" so you can.

This thread might help you (read it all, but see post #10):

If you were the first user and installed the system you will be by default be a member of group admin who can shutdown. If your user was added later without specifically making you a member of the admin group you won't be able to shutdown. Perhaps this is your problem.
