browser displaying localhost pages in code

hi there,
I 've been playing around with apache, and on Ubuntu the http://localhost index.html will only display in a browser as code, as if in an editor. I've been googling and looking this up, but am coming up lank; does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong? I've reinstalled apache2 so its pretty much a basic install of that, with the exception of the index.html

thanks in advance,
howard

sounds like a html problem to me... could you post the code between [ code ] [/ code ] tags (minus spaces in the tags) and I'll check it out. or, can you upload it to a website and test it out?

the html code came from my testing webspace, so it works, and I'm now back to the problem of getting 'connection refused' and 'could not connect' in firefox and opera.
It looks ok if i open it with nvu, now that I've got it a .css file sat in the same directory, but once again, no apache! :(

I'll keep chipping away at it for a bit...

apache make_sock

I've just reinstalled apache2, and have the same could not connect problem.

Also 'sudo apachectl start' always gives me:
apachectl : command not found.

Is it possible that i have not fully installed apache?

when i searched for 'apache' an found the binary, I cd'd there adn tried:

/usr/sbin$ apache2

which brought up this:

(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

Can you tell me what this is saying?

Many thanks in advance, I'm googling as well as asking! :)

ok, just as a follow up, I fixed by reinstalling ubuntu afresh.
I've now got nice .swf embedded web page displaying under localhost.
Good job the hdd didn't have anything precious on it! ;)
