When IBM bought Lotus, something similar was done and in my opinion it ruined Lotus Notes. But on the other hand I believe Lotus was only a year or two away from bankruptcy, so IBM did keep the company going for many more years.
AFAIK, Red Hat was still quite viable at the time of purchase, so will be interesting to see how much more it changes. We already saw the CentOS change, wonder what is next.
