xine or mplayer for Suse 9.3 pro?
 

I just want to watch DVDs and some media files. Is one of these apps better than the other in Suse 9.3 pro? Sorry if this question has been asked before, I tried to do a search but it just hangs for a long time. TIA :)

Just install whichever of the two you prefer because they both do the same job very well.

My Dear Friends, So far as concern to my knowledge, SuSE 9.3 has NO any video player which can play DVD video file due to some certifiacte problem from DVD community.

Let me tell you one more thing, if you want to install both or any application from suSE 9.3 Source CD/DVD then it will not work. If you get source of these applications and compile and install then you can get what you desire.

but inbuilt xine or any other player lack of DVD playback plugin.

Search related links , you would definately get one link of the site from you can download these players which will be able to play DVD format.

Yes I noticed the built in media players lack a lot of the plugins requires because of licensing issues and you cannot get them to work. That is why I was going to use an open source version. I was just wondering if anyone had a preference over one or the other, based on experience, with Suse 9.3 pro.

I wrote a long reply but it is obviously lost.
I installed Mplayer but found it slightly pixellated.
No doubt there is a way of adjusting that (if anyone knows please tell me how).

I'm lost in this area and tend to agree with bedi-beparwah. Plugins for Suse...I don't think so. I know I tried a few of them and still no luck with a successful install. Oh well.

Don't fret - it is not as difficult as some make it sound.

rpmbone, rpmseek, and rpmfind all host xine libraries and decss libraries which work just fine. Just update xine-lib, install the decss library, and toss in w32codec-all libraries and you will be able to play DVDs and just about every other video file format you can imagine.

In addition to xine and mplayer, i'd add kmplayer -- GUI front end to both that helps with the configuration. With these three you'll be able to watch a very wide range of video both streaming and Hollywood DVD.

So if SuSE 9.3 has such limitations with multimedia sound, then is there a better Linux distribution?

Any multimedia issues with Suse 9.3 cn be resolved by a simple online update. I don;t know why they crippled the multimdia apps in the version that they shipped.

I just downloaded the 5 CD set. Good to know, as I had the same problem in 9.1.

I simply went and got the latest xine, kaffine and w32codecs builds and everything worked fine. Had me stumped for a bit, too.

SuSE is following the laws of Germany. Germany has some of the strongest intellectual property rights on the planet. In Germany you can't provide the CSS decoder necessary to view commercial movie on DVD -- think Hollywood. Software for the MP3 format is also not allowed. SuSE is a German company, even though owned by Novell, an American company. Novell has provided multi-media updates through YaST/YOU that solve the MP3 issue. The xine site I mentioned above provided the latest RPM versions to allow the watching of commercial DVD movie -- I check back often to have the latest and greatest.

SuSE 9.3 is easily fixed for full multimedia support, here's an easy n00bified way of doing it..


Do an online update from Yast and install the Multimedia Packs...

Next open up Yast and in the software section open 'Change Source of Installation'.
Add the Packman Yast source;
Protocol - HTTP
Server Name - packman.iu-bremen.de
Directory on Server - suse/9.3

once that's added click on the up button so packman is at the top.
...then OK & Finish


Now in Yast open 'Install & Remove Software' and use the package manager to uninstall mplayer, kaffeine, xine-ui and libxine1.
Then reinstall those packages from the packman source (Yast will prompt you to accept the W32codecs to go with Mplayer).
This will get everything working with all codecs you'll need.

Lastly to get DVD video playback working install 'libdvdcss'.
Just download this RPM and install with Yast (You can just launch the RPM from Konqueror and click on 'Install with Yast').
