Tell us about your SuSE install procedure. Smooth? Not??

I have 9.1, 9.2, and 9.3 and they all do the same thing!!!! No graphical interface that works with installation. I'm taking a poll about how your install went, I have had so many problems trying to get this to work I'm about ready to quit. I've tried 3 different boxes and they all do the same thing!

After you vote, write a little post about your trials installing any SuSE install. Thanks a lot!

John_Emad 07-09-2005 09:44 AM

It just worked very very smoothly

John_Emad 07-09-2005 09:46 AM

Would you tell us what are the problems that you faced ??

reddazz 07-09-2005 09:49 AM

Mine worked smoothly. Did you install these distros on the same machine? If so try a different machine because the problems you are experiencing could be related to your hardware configuration.

fouldsy 07-09-2005 10:09 AM

SuSE has always been one of the smoothest for me. I don't run it personally, but usually stick it on a test machine when new versions are released like i do with a few other distros just so I can see what it's like and the improvements made. Personally, I thought SuSE always had the best hardware detection I'd come across, and one of the best graphical setup tools, sax, I'd come across. Always worked for me, no matter whether it was a laptop screen, crt monitor, tft, etc.

I'm a bit surprised you've had the same problems on 3 version of SuSE and with 3 different boxes. Are they using a similar graphics chipset, if so, what kind? I'd guess there is something common between the different machines you've tried which is why it's leading to such a frustrating experience.

A6Quattro 07-09-2005 10:21 AM

I have all WD HD's. NEC DVD-R's, P4 2.6, P4 2.53, AMD Athlon 3200 64bit, MSI K7, MSI K8N, ATI Video cards, Onboard Sound, Samsung Syncmaster monitors (Possible problem???)

FC3 worked on all of them:rolleyes:

mhallbiai 07-09-2005 10:24 AM

same as John_Emad, reddazz, and fouldsy; installs go smoothly.
i dont use it for much more than testing but a few guys where i work swear by it.

definitely one of the better hw detection Distros and sax is great too.

A6Quattro 07-09-2005 11:00 AM

I'd love to get it to work but I don't think it is going to happen. Maybe I'll build a new box...

CouchMaster 07-09-2005 11:00 AM

I've installed 9.1 personal and 9.1 pro about 20 times and never had a problem!

I've just got 9.3 and as soon as I get another HD it's going on...

A6Quattro 07-09-2005 11:58 AM

I can get farther in text mode. it seems to have a real problem with IRQ#10 on my one system and while in text mode it stalls at: PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00)

There are NO cards plugged into any PCI slots! It works with the video card I know...

abisko00 07-09-2005 01:10 PM

It really depends on hardware and version.

It was a little troublesome to install 9.0 on my Dell Desktop (GX270) and on my Notebook (Presario 900 series), but there was never a problem that could not be solved (BIOS updates, Manual Installation, newer version).

ng0g 07-09-2005 01:27 PM

The "install" went very smoothly until I at the very end, after things are really actually already installed and the install program asks you if you want to check for upates. I said "yes" and it brought up YaST and listed a bunch of stuff. I checked it all and the update crashed part way through. Not really crash but stop and give me an error message telling me that it was unable to successfully do the update on some package. I had to finished the install and not do updates. Then after the install do them a few at a time. Choosing more then a few caused it to do the same thing. I have a AMD xp2400+ with 1 gig of fast ddr memory. I have never been able to get the java package to update successfully. Even choosing several different sites did not help.

Guvnor 07-09-2005 02:11 PM

The installer itself has been pretty solid for me. Except once when I was installing onto a Windows machine and I told it to use the entire hard drive and delete Windows, it wouldn't do it right, so I had to manually partition.

Also, I've had troubles with Oregon State's ftp server when I installed it on my laptop, and had trouble with ibiblio's server when I installed it on my parent's computer. I've had no problem with the Utah ftp server...

I always have problems putting more than one Linux install on a drive. I had 2 HD's in and installed FC3 on hda and Mandriva 2005 on hdc (wich was the second installation on the box) it recognized my FC3 install and asked what bootloader I want to use. well When I was done neither OS worked. FC3 just came up and said GRUB. If I booted to hdc it said there was no OS on it. U know anywhere that has a good manual for partitioning in linux? The rules and such.

HowardL 07-09-2005 05:13 PM

The install went smoothly with both 9.2 and 9.3 on two different boxes using the downloaded DVD image file. I had a problem with the 9.3 CD install however: the install couldn't find the software packages. I want to install 9.3 using the CD's on the second box, but will have to delve into the problem a bit more.

All in all it went very smoothly including the Yast updates. No problems worth mentioning. Both boxes are homebuilts and dual booting with XP installed on two different drives and Suse on the third. Very smooth.

A6Quattro 07-09-2005 05:21 PM

I have another box I haven't tested it on. It is an MSI K8N Neo4 Platnium or someting. The only questionable thing is that the video card is an ATI AIW X600 PCI-Xpress. Do you thing this will work?

The Stranger 07-09-2005 05:27 PM

I have installed SUSE 9.1, 9.2 and just installed 9.3 with no major issues. When installing 9.3, though the mouse gave me some problems. After configuring it through Sax2, it worked great. I do have an issue with the GIMP and my scanner. I have an Epson Stylus CX5400 and can not get the thing to work! Apparently there is an issue with the GIMP and the epkowa and iscan drivers that I have yet to resolve. Too bad though, since I will now have to result to my windoze OS for my scanning jobs.

bluesman2333 07-09-2005 09:47 PM

SUSE 9.0, 9.1, and 9.2 which I paid retail for BTW, went great. Any problem was mine. "ID ten T" errors all the way.

SUSE 9.3, which I also paid retail for $100.00 US, was a train wreck on over 15 installs. Installs that actually did work had file system errors on boot and eventually a non-working box.

I am happily now using Mepis and SUSE can forget about EVER getting another penny out of me.

Firn 07-10-2005 09:02 AM

suse 9,1 and 9,3 both installed smoothly on my main box, detected everything, I only had to alter the standard resolution in sax.
on my laptop tho, I've never been able to install 9,3. 9,1 and 9,2 work, 9,3 doesn't. Not that it matters much, since I run Debian on my laptop and dont plan to change that; I was just wanting to test the battry duration in suse 9.3, but it's weird to see that xorg wont install in suse 9,3.

duliano 07-16-2005 09:28 PM

I have done many 32 bit installs. But my most recent on 9.3 was a 64bit install via ftp using an ISO that was mounted as a directory. I had just built this machine so there were many unknowns going into the install. However the install went perfectly. Graphical Yast came up, all my devices were recognized and my first online update installed the nvida drivers perfectly. One of the smoothest installs that I have had ever with SuSE!!

A6Quattro 07-16-2005 10:07 PM

if you don't mind, what compnents are in your system?

AdamCo 07-17-2005 12:19 AM

9.0 I had to edit the X config file before I could install in GUI mode, but after that it was perfect. 9.1, 92., and 9.3 all installed perfect. I am taking a linux class at school and my instructor couldn't get Fedora Core or Red Hat to install on the machines so I brought in my Suse 9.3 CDs and it installed without any problem. I have been very satisfied with Suse. For those of you that have had problems, did you install from a bought package or burned ISOs you downloaded, between the download and the burning, there could be bits missing and that can lead to a bad install.

Bluesman2333. You can get suse 9.3 pro update at amazon for 52$, it's just like the regular one but it doesn't have the amin guide.

AdamCo 07-17-2005 12:24 AM

My setup is:

Abit IS7-E motherboard
Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor
ATI 9200 SE video card
onboard sound
Maxtor 80GB HD
80GB Western Digital HD (Windows)
ViewSonic VG170m monitor
Canon S450 printer

Everything was detected perfect, well besides my USB modem, but that is a different story.

girlboxer5 07-17-2005 02:04 AM

Installs have been a mixed bag with SuSE. I had major problems trying to install 9.3 and 9.2 both, because the graphical installer hung after creating an incoherent blob at the top of the monitor and no display. I downloaded 9.1 personal, and the text installer worked fine. Somehow, when I tried to do an FTP install of 9.2, the YaST installer worked perfectly. Then, when SuSE changed its FTP update servers a couple of weeks ago, I tried to do a graphical FTP install of 9.3, but it didn't work, with the same blobbing problem. Luckily, I was able to find the text installer hiding under F2 on the splash screen, and tried my original 9.3 CDs again. The install went perfectly :)

mkoljack 07-17-2005 02:13 AM

Smooth

Install and updates went perfect. Hardware configuration perfect. YAST even configured grub correctly, recognizing windows, fedora 3, and my fat32 partition. It correctly setup /etc/fstab from install. I didn't have to do a thing except reboot.

I had only problem. SaX2 was detecting my onboard video card and my PCI video card (ATI Radeon 9200). I disabled the onboard video card in BIOS but SuSE still picked it up as well as the ATI card. I had no idea how to dismantle the onboard video card. So, I had to learn how to reconfigure xorg using sax2 commands. Thank god for the sax2 help screens. After that, done and wow -- I love SuSE 9.3.

Master_Simon 07-17-2005 03:00 AM

Well not exactly a very subjective survey was it now?
Was it bad bad or very bad or just OK?
I understand you've obviously had problems but the poll was almost like a government poll, ie vote my way or not at all.
I have been a SUSE user in one way or another for years now, although until recently not ever delved into the workings, I personally feel if it goes too easy then you'll never learn anything. ie previously it has always gone to easy but then I've never really been cutting edge before.

My only install gripe was actually nothing to do with SUSE at all, being related to KDE and nVidia, the problem being the monitor was not on the database and therefore reported incorrectly and the fonts needed a magnifying glass, after several hours picking my way through the LQ forum I found a resolve, which was remarkably easy, given the nature of the problem, but, has helped me understand how it appears to work just a little bit better.

I have just loaded debian onto an old machine (very old P2-266) with the view of learning remote operation, my linux boxes appear to be older kit but if I am happy with the 9.3, in a month I'll swap my main box over to LINUX and send XP packing.

Maybe then I'll experience some real install difficulties, ( AMD 64 3200 128Mb Geforce graphics card and Nvidia chipset) maybe I'll be voting again :Pengy:

As a PS to this why use an ATi graphics card then moan if it doesn't work, their attitude has been anything but benevolent towards LINUX in the past, why not support the companies who give us the support we require?

SuSe 9.3 Install

Installation was a breeze but when I started installing programs (softwares) I found a lot have not upgraded to the current kernel therefore it created a lot of extra work for me. Linux is finally getting some recognition from vendors plus SuSe now has a lot of support from Novell's site. I wish they would improve Yast some more but its a lot better then previous versions. I still find Apt better for installing with Syntax.:study: :study:

Yast problems after new install

I reinstalled my 10.1. Everything works, except when I try to go into 'Graphics card and monitor' in Yast. Every other part of Yast works, but when going in to change monitor settings, Yast crashes! How can every other part of Yast work, yet it crashes only in 'Graphics card and monitor'? This doesn't make any sense to me. Been driving me crazy for several days now. My monitor is stuck in 960X529. ??? 10.1 detected all of my hardware accurately. So why won't it let me change anything through Yast or the desktop? Very odd indeed! New video drivers were installed, still no success. Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!

rkelsen 10-16-2006 08:53 PM

I installed Suse 10.0 a while back. Everything worked out of the box. I mean EVERYTHING, including my Netgear PCI wireless NIC. All I had to do was enter the ESSID and passphrase. Also, once connected to the internet, it downloaded and automatically configured the NVidia accelerated 3D drivers for me.

I've been using Linux since 1999. At no time have I ever had a smoother or easier Linux installation where EVERYTHING worked (without ANY input from me) right out of the box.

That said, I didn't like anything else about Suse. It just doesn't do it for me. I'm a tinkerer, so I prefer Slackware.

The installation was nothing short of brilliant though.

greenarrow1 10-16-2006 09:01 PM

On your graphics card please update the drivers. 10.1 now has ati and nvidia drivers within Yast updates. If you do not have one of these cards then you need to go to your card vendor site and download and install Linux drivers. Also, what desktop are you using? KDE or Gnome! Gnome you need to go into the Gnome settings not Yast.

I sent you a LQ email with link and instructions

dasy2k1 10-17-2006 06:30 AM

The partitioner is useless!!! especially if you want / to be bigger than /home!!!
in the end i partitioned with CFDISK from a slackware disk then swore at the suse partitioner untill it set the mount points like i wanted...

the rest of teh install went smoothly (if a bit slow!) (like 6 hours!!!) untill it tryed to auto detect printers. this caused a total system hang.... punched the reset button and it worked anyway without that step....

trying to auto detect printers in yast fails too, but at least it lets you skip that step... the installer really should too!

laceupboots 10-17-2006 06:43 AM

I've had no problems with Suse 10.0 and am reluctant to upgrade to 10.1. especially the Open Source version. I've heard that it still has some bugs. Hardware detection was good, DSL was easy through Yast. Found the solution for
my Epson CX4800 all-in-one. I have an HP 305 with an upgrade to a 80G hard drive. I dual boot with Windows XP. It's been one of my favorite flavors so far.

bibh_lnxq 10-17-2006 05:00 PM

I have installed SUSE from 6.x onwards, and have had no problems, except for one thing: it was always a bit of a headache getting sound to work. With other distro's (Slack, Vector, Zenwalk, Fedora - all of these on the same hardware) no problems in that department.

SuSe 10.1

SuSe 10.1 has been remastered as of Oct 15 at the following link:

http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...ution/SL-10.1/

This includes all fixes and flaws have been corrected. It also includes some files that were mssing from the original issue. You can also use this to update your current version of 10.1. There is also the full 64 bit DVD or cd's if anyone is interested. The broken Yast and YUM are fully working now - so enjoy.

leandean 10-18-2006 12:48 AM

Except the DVD re-master was fubarred and won't be ready until the end of the week.

ionmich 10-18-2006 02:41 AM

1st. computer - SUSE 9.1 - simple and easy installation
2nd. computer - SUSE 9.3 - simple and easy installation
3rd. computer - SUSE 9.3 - wouldn't install
------------------ SUSE 10.0 - wouldn't install
------------------ SUSE 10.1 - wouldn't install
------------------ SUSE 10.2 Alpha1 - non graphic installation was simple but since it is an Alpha other problems keep intruding, mainly additional application incompatibilities.

In my opinion 9.3 is the most stable and reliable version I have used. I don't like fiddling with software. That's why I think SUSE suits me best over Slackware, Mandrake, Fedora, Ubuntu, and several insignificant others.

lordSaurontheGreat 10-18-2006 10:45 AM

=== short version ===

hung twice before getting to any user input areas

third time it worked

=== long version ===

hung once before UI prompt
next time died while shrinking ntfs partition. my fault - hadn't defragged the part. in about 5 months
worked like a charm after that. no problems whatsoever.

Furbarred Remastered Reply

Funny I downloaded and install both the remastered 32 and 64 bit DVD's yesterday for 10.1. Besides I get emails w/links from Andreas when programs are released or in Beta since I am a tester for SuSe/Novell. I check the releases and if they are valid for user download I try to post the links on the different SuSe forums providing I have the time. Only reason I am replying to this post is that I received a alert that someone posted to my 2005 post about SuSe 9.3, Lol.

i_s 10-18-2006 10:06 PM

I have installed
suse 6.?
suse 9.2
suse 9.3
suse 10.0
suse 10.1

and never had a problem, the installations were on different machines and different specs that include

Amd Athlon ?? (i don't recall the exact specs)
256MB ram
20GB HD
ATI graphics

Athlon 2000+
1GB Ram 40GB HD,
ATI mobility U1

Pentium D 950
2GB ram
160 GB HD
Nvidia

Definitely, suse has been the easiest linux to install for me.

andrewdodsworth 10-19-2006 04:54 AM

I've installed every SuSE from 8.0 thru 10.1.

Only issues have ever been when upgrading major releases, however, new installs always worked except on one Toshiba laptop which had the 'Toshiba keyboard error'. However, even that was fine on 10.1.

thorn3 10-19-2006 12:05 PM

How does anyone download the new 10.1? I have been trying for two days now, on a fast broadband connection. It says that it will take over 100 hours for one CD! Is there a site that will download faster than that? It would appear that the site is severely overloaded!

bjcunn 10-20-2006 08:32 AM

Suse 10.1 install

The install went very well, most every thing worked right off. had to go find a few things for dvd playback, java, etc. but these were minor and I learned a lot in the process. the people on the forums are the greatest. Problems so far are minor compared to those I had with windows, at least i have never lost anything with linux. I have on occasion forgot where I put it, but at least it was still there when I remembered where I sent it. Just wandering has Linux ever "crashed" my system has be up a couple of months. this was unheard of when I had Xp.

jupami 10-20-2006 10:20 AM

I installed 9.2 as a dual boot with Windows XP and it went very smooth. It created all the partitions and has worked fine for over a year until just recently when it refused to boot the KDE GUI. I am really having a time trying to restore it and am finding out from the posts on this site that it is even more of a problem in the 10.x versions. Otherwise, I have enjoyed using 9.2 and plan to continue along the SUSE path with the goal of replacing all my Windows apps with Linux apps as they become available and as I understand how to set them up.

JonBrant 10-20-2006 07:38 PM

Smooth as silk (10.1). It takes AGES to check the packages though, and the partitioning tools blow. If I want to simply resize a partition, I have to mess with the cylinders... I shouldn't have to. I should simply be able to respecify a size

Other than that, flawless. I'm about to install it again

suse91pro 10-20-2006 08:18 PM

It goes smoothly with no problems, but the Partitioning tool is hard to understand for a newbie like myself. I sure would like learn how to use it so i can choose how big my Partitions should be.

RetepNamenots 10-21-2006 02:39 AM

Very smoothly, did exactly what I had asked for :)

Except for maybe Disk Druid (from Red Hat) that's the best partitioning tool there is (that I've used.)

Is there a Disk Druid installation file for Suse 10.1? if there is please post the link, if not do you recommend that i dump suse and instal Red Hat or Fedora?

m_wielgus 10-22-2006 03:12 PM

Went smoothly on my ThinkPad600x (I've tried MEPIS and Ubuntu before, and they didn't want to boot after installation, but SuSE did it).
