Please Unify Package Manager(s) 10.1
I can't be the only one on this board who is now totally confused and flummexed by the plethora of package managers etc.
Up to SUSE 10 it was relatively straight forward -- YAST whatever its faults always did the job. Now with 10.1 we have SMART, RUG, WGET and command line for RPM. YAST itself doesn't work in the way it did before. Whilst one of the beauties of Linux of whatever distro is the choice one has (there's usually always more than one way of doing something) I for one still yearn for a 1-Stop GUI package manager that works relatively simple so that even this dummo thickhead (i.e me) can use it without wanting to chuck my computer in the bin every time I try and install / upgrade software. I've had SUSE 10 for ages --stable as a rock and love it. However eventually I'll have to upgrade and judging by what I've seen of 10.1 I'm not looking forward to it. Perhaps 10.2 or 11.0 will re-address this problem. Linux has the potential now to make inroads into the workstation arena - especially with VISTA being delayed (again) and of course its enormous requirements. However the first part of any OS (assuming it's up and running) is to be able to INSTALL / REMOVE / MANAGE software simply. This to me is a NR 1 requirement. Anyay excuse for the RANT -. Cheers -K |

The list is endless ; apt4rpm+synaptics, yum, ... IMO there are only two working package managers in suse 10.1 1) RPM in command line 2) Gurus unofficial version of SMART |
