OPenSUSE Yast repositories?
Where is a list of repositories for YAST on OPenSUSE 10.0 Beta1?
Maybe I am doing something wrong but none of the ones listed on the documentation page seem to work I get a weird error when I try to enter any of them. This is my first time using SUSE and so far it is very nice. If I can get this repository thing worked out I will be good to go. It installed without any problems on my Dell Latitude C600 . |
Success!!
Added http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...1/inst-source/ http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...t-source-java/ Yippie. Also found out how to look through the package instead of just searching. SUSE is cool. The only thing I can't find is Rox-filer. :( But hey I did find Wesnoth and Fillet two of the coolest games. |

So far I am impressed. The only thing that was a little bit of a pain was browser plugins. In Debian just apt-get install flash also installed the browser plugin. Not that it was really that big a deal, manually copying or symlinking only took me 5 minutes to get Java, Flash, RealPlayer and Adobe all working.
The System Update is cool, it took two hours to completely update to Beta2. For my first trip into the land of SUSE I am pleasantly surprised at how easy it is. The way YAST installs rpms is kinda cool also. The only thing I haven't taken the time to install is Mplayer with the Mozilla plugin, mplayer-plugin. Once I do that I will be good to go. Ooops and the ATI video driver, although everything works without it so I may not bother. Even managed to get Superkaramba from Kde-look.org SUSE is definitely a distro I would recommend, even a completely newbie could install it and get it working. |
Hey mods, can you guys please make this a sticky since it's bound to be an oft-asked question?
Thanks! :) |
These are the general repositories>
OpenSUSE YAST sources http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...1/inst-source/ http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...t-source-java/ http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...2/inst-source/ http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...t-source-java/ http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse...t/inst-source/ Also: Guru's RPM Site http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/ Yast Source: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.0/ Packman: http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.0/ I found the easiest way to add a new source rather than doing it in YAST wsa to use a terminal. Open a terminal as root then type: installations_sources -a your source then hit enter Much easier and faster. Checked out apt4rpm and so far the sources only go up to 9.3 hopefully someone will list some for OpenSUSE soon as apt4rpm is included with Beta2. If anyone knows of any other working sources for either YOU or apt4rpm please post them in this thread. Thanks. Also one quick question. Will an rpm for 9.3 work for 10.0beta? |
If you want to give apt4rpm a try here is a sources.list for 10.0
apt4rpm sources.list rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/10.0-i386 suser-guru rpmkeys base java extra suser-jengelh suser-tux packman packman-i686 kernel-of-the-day suse-people suse-projects security rpm-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/10.0-i386 suser-guru rpmkeys base java extra suser-jengelh suser-tux packman packman-i686 kernel-of-the-day suse-people suse-projects security Ok anyone know the right/correct way to use apt4rpm? I found the list above on the apt4rpm for SuSE site and when I run apt-get update all I get are errors. |
|
As requested, I'll sticky this. If it starts to get to overused (as open stickies can get) I'll have to lock/close it. If additions or alterations are necessary to existing posts at that time, report the thread or email me directly with the necessary changes. :)
Cool |
Please, start a new thread for questions not directly related to Yast repositories.
Thank You, I'll split this one out, but in the future, anyone posting in this thread, please try to keep the discussion as noted above. Cool |

SUSE 9.3 YOU Server list as well please
Could you also add a link to the YOU servers for 9.3 as well
- A new 9.3(PRO) Install doesn't seem to have any links anymore -- previous SUSE installs as far back as version 7 always worked -- I used to do an automatic YOU after the intial system install. Now this doesn't work anymore. Thanks -K |
Question - can I directly update from 9.3 to 10.0 using APT (preferable) or YAST? If I simply add the 10.0 repositories to my list, what will happen?

It probably wouldn't be a good idea. Maybe once 10.0 becomes stable. OpenSUSE YAST and apt4rpm |

Don't fear, the YOU packages are on the same servers as the other packages. You can get a list of servers from http://www.novell.com/products/linux...t_mirrors.html If the YaST package url is: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/9.3/ Then the YOU url is: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/ |
10.0 beta2 to beta3 to beta4 etc....?
i currently run 10.0 beta2..
just noticed that there is now a beta3 available.. also noticed that it's only a week between beta2 and beta3.. i see that you can 'upgrade' your i386 beta2 to beta3 via smaller delta iso's.. how do i do if i want to 'upgrade' my 64bit beta2 to beta3 and etc..? do i really need to download, burn and re-install from 5 new iso's every time (week..?) the next beta is out..? |
NO just add the beta3 sources. You can change the beta1 sources to beta3 but keep the beta2 sources. Then run System Update.
|
craigevil,
hhmmm..hm..ok - i tried that - but it seems to me that it did not work really....?? when i made the sys update i selected all packages to be forced update.. then i was asked to insert the the 5 installation cd's (beta2) one by one.. at no point could i see any updating linked to the online /inst-source dir so is that a sys update to the beta3 from the beta2..? and is it possible to check which beta i have installed..? |
I just clicked System Update. Not the software update in YOU zzzall.
Going from beta2 to beta3 didn't seem to download as many files as going from beta1 to beta 2 did. The beta1 to beta2 update downloaded 1.8GB of files. Had to also switch disks a few times. The beta2 to beta3 update only downloaded around 10MB. |
next question
i just saw in the repositories that there is now delta iso's available also for x86_64.. i tried downloading these (beta3_beta4) put the 5 of them into the same dir as the 5 beta2 iso's made the: Code:
$ applydeltaiso SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-x86_64-Beta2-CD1.iso \SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-x86_64-Beta2_Beta3_beta4-CD1.delta.iso ended up in 'success'.. but i expected to see 5 new iso's named SUSE-10.0-CD-OSS-x86_64-Beta4-CD1.iso etc.. for me to burn on 5 blank cd's in order to make a new install - or can you update your sys with the new iso's (if you have those - that is)..? none of those - just the same 10 files within the dir.. what could i be doing wrong - or is this the way to do a delta update with the old iso's..? |
alright - i seem to have finally grapped the deal..
i just did another system update - and again it asked for 2 of the cd's..and updated the kernel - which btw is 2.6.13-rc6-git7-3-smp.. so i assume that this is all there is to it..? but still: is it possible to check anywhere which beta ver (2, 3 or 4) is in your box..? thx for your patience.. :D |
is Yast like RPMDRAKE in madriva?
|
More. It is an all-in-one hardware/general system configuration tool. It's kinda like the control panel on a windows box. Almost any configuration that requires root access can be done from YaST.
One of the YaST modules is an rpm frontend. It is where you go on a SuSE box install any package that came with the distro. |

I'm wondering if those sources by "craigevil" on the first page here for Yast are still valid, I have tried clicking on the links & they lead to nothing.
If that is the case then what sources do we have for SuSE 10. The other reason I ask is I am also having trouble adding them to my Sources in Yast but might be doing it wrong as I am not quite sure which part goes in the "add to Directory part" & which part of Repo goes to "Server Name" & when I try to add them through Terminal as described I get "no such file or directory" so I think I ain't doing it right? |
I got the last 2 to work on his list " suser-guru & pacman" but the others seem to be dead ink- 4 SuSE 10.
I might try and install APt & give that ago, AnyWay |
Have you noticed the Wiki at OpenSuSE.org? It contains a full list already :)

Repos from ftp.gwdg.de are not working.... The link seems to be broken or something like this....
But repos from Packman and Schiele are ok.... but doesn't work !!!! I add these repos to YaST (and YaST added both ok) but when I go to Software Manager (in YaST) I receive the message "Looking For Avaliable Packages" but, when it ends, I can't find any packages from Packman or Schiele.... Only packages from CDs !! I've been using this process on many installs for SuSE 9.3, and all works great ! Why not works on SuSE 10 ??? Oh, yes... I'm using SuSE 10.0 GM, in 5 CDs, downloaded from one SuSE mirror.... And I make all upgrades (with YOU) in install process... Any help ? |

I've found that at http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/in...howtopic=21505. Look for the mirros at ftp://mirrors.mathematik.uni-bielefe...uSE/10.0-i386/ I'll test this later. |
where to get rpm file for Abiword.
I don't want to run tarball. |
repository not accepting
Dear folks,
i am a suse newbie here. Just got on ( and loving it) the 10. Well i have a problem - whenever i try to enter the repository name into the yast it returns an error. Am i doing it wrong? can i know the setp by step procedure to add a repository ... thanks |
Lets say a repo has the url http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/ , you would select http as the protocol. The name of the server would be ftp.opensuse.org and the installation directory would be pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source .
|
way to go !
thanks a lot reddazz ! it sure worked now.it was throwing error like media_ .whatever.
Can you please put up a couple of more repositories ? and would you mind helping me with the following: 1. How to install - and run *.jar files 2. How o deal with tar.gz /tar files 3. RealPlayer not working (mozilla) ...when i click on a link it just stays there..no response. thanks once again running Suse10 Gnome celeron 2.8Laptop |
Jar files,
Code:
$java -jar jar-file For Realplayer to work with Firefox, just run it and make sure you select the option to configure Mozilla helpers. |
Err..real player doing nothing
hii reddazz
thanks once again for the tip on jar files...i have instaled real, it has configured to mozilla helpers-but anytime i use a real player online -it just says intitializing ..no progress hencforth... thanks mate |
Where did you get the realplayer package? Is it an rpm?
|
rpm -yast
Dear Redhazz,
real player was installed from yast ... i had once unistalled real player and reinstalled it again when it was not working(same problem). the real player is opening in its own window ..but not playing streaming content. - do you thing it s problem with the file handler inside mozilla ?(is ti helix ?) Now,as for the jar file when i enter the command - it says '-jar'command not recognised |

Realplayer comes together in the DVD Eval of suse 10.0, no need to download separately.
|
Since none of the origional repositories links at the beginning of this post work anymore, anyone care to share ones that work? Opensuse.org happens to be completely useless.

Supplement to redazz post (for the lazy):
http://www.opensuse.org/Additional_Y...e_Repositories http://www.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version |
Ah, permit me to clarify myself. It's not immediately clear what the URL is of the repositories the OpenSuSE website is referring to when it says, "A complete SuSE experience." I found the other URLs okay, after some hair-pulling and missed links, but I'm still not sure what it refers to in that instance.
What I find works very well is some linked to in the article, "Hacking OpenSuSE" on The Jem Report. Maybe they're what they refer to? Clicking "International Mirrors for the Released Versions" happens to be a bad link on the site. (OpenSuSE's website needs to be as clean as its distro!) Listed in the article are: mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra Plus adding Pacman leads to a very easy install of most any software you want... Sorry about the confusion. SuSE :newbie: |
I'm afraid I must be doing something wrong here. I just installed opensuse 10.0. I go to YaST, Software, Installation Source, then click "Add."
No matter what I try to add (packman, mirrors, etc.), I get the following message: Unable to create installation source from URL Details: ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media) What does this mean, and how do I fix it? I've been reading all the various threads on 10.0 sources, but I can't get anything to work. thanks! |
General rules for YaST sources:
- enter the plain server address. No slashes, no protocols! (e.g. ftp.suse.com) - enter the path to the directory that contains the file 'directory.yast'. No other directory will work! - do not start the path with a slash! Otherwise, use the command 'installation_sources -a <url>' from a root-console. Here you can type the URL just like you would do in your browser. This is a good way of testing the URL, btw: type it in your browsers address line and see if you find the file 'directory.yast'. |

(the picture shows a weird failure like ftp://http:// - this was my fault, reproducing a screenshot in a hurry. else i follow the yast-rules mentioned above) is there any possibility for a failure in yast? am i doing something wrong? using the terminal is not really an option for me. i appreciate any help! regards ungua edit: similar error to cartwright, i presume...? edit 041205: ... in other words, there is no solution? any other options to update the system? i cannot even watch videos now. |
http servers:
packman.rsync.zmi.at suse/10.0 packman.iu-bremen.de suse/10.0 ftp servers: ftp.gwdg.de pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.0 mirrors.kernel.org opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java mirrors.kernel.org opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source mirrors.kernel.org suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra mirrors.mathematik.uni-bielefeld.de pub/linux/suse/suse/i386/current/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra Don't forget to turn it on and make it available. If you still have errors then type it manually. Sometime cut and paste doesn't work simply because you add a space before or after that unintentionally then it won't give you correct address! |
