how to install wine?
 
I am a newbie with linux, and would like to play a few windows games. I have heard of wine as a windows emulator, does anyone know of a well working version, and how to install it? Please be specific, because I don't know my way around linux too well yet. Also, is wine capable of playing games with as good quality as windows, or is it significantly slower? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

You can compile it from source or get a prebuilt package from linuxpackages.

I'd highly recommend installing the package from linuxpackages.net and then also googling for winetools and installing that as well.

Once wine is installed, use winetools to set up your wine fake windows systems. It will reduce your headaches a bit.

I only use one windoze app and it runs well in wine, but not all of them will. Try it and see.

Also note that there are some commercial wine-like products like cedega (www.transgaming.com) specifically designed for using games, they may work better than wine on games but are not free.
