What does everyone use for a file manager

Dolphin in KDE4 seems about useless, missing most of the features of konq in kde3 and takes forever to display folders with a lot of files, is there anything better?

brianL 03-27-2011 07:44 PM

You can use Konqueror in KDE4.

dive 03-27-2011 07:46 PM

I use Dolphin when I want quickly want to grab some files from/to a USB stick or CD.

Would be interested to find an alternative though.

Larry Webb 03-27-2011 07:46 PM

I have done away with file managers and have one home folder desktop with links to everything in home. Everything else is found through ls command or cat /proc/partitions.

psionl0 03-27-2011 07:47 PM

I use thunar myself. It is fast and easy to use.

Of course, to get the icons on it use need to create the file $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0 and add the line:
Code:

gtk-icon-theme-name = "Tango"
to the file.

enine 03-27-2011 07:51 PM

Yes, you can use konqueror in kde4 but it seems to be sharing libraries with dolphin as it suffers the same issues.
I'm trying to take pictures from my phone and sort them out, every so often I'll copy the 1000 or so pictures off of my phone and sort them. Konq/dolphin just can't handle more than a few files.
So I hit file/new folder and wait and finally it creates it then it scrolls up to where it is so I have to slowly scroll back down to the group of pictures I found and wanted to separate out.

TobiSGD 03-27-2011 07:51 PM

I use XFCE and am used to Thunar, it is fast and does all what I want.

Shouldn't be necessary on a standard Slackware installation.

It's not necessary on XFCE but you need to have the file if your WM is fluxbox. Don't know about KDE.

Ah, thanks for the clarification.

Seems this problem has been around a while? :)

foodown 03-27-2011 08:10 PM

I'd have to agree that Thunar is the best for that sort of thing out of the file managers that come with Slackware.

However, if you're talking thousands of files I'd just about always be using bash for that ... You're not really talking about anything intense, just some 'mv' or 'cp' action.

enine 03-27-2011 08:17 PM

Well, I'm sorting pictures. Previewing thumbnails on the right pane to see what they look like then creating folders in the left and dragging a few at a time into the proper folder for whatever event I took the picture for. dolphin I create the folder then it falls in its place but its the current selected so I have to scroll back down to where I was then select a few pictures and move them into that folder. Of course each of those steps takes a loooong time. Then I try to select a few and it scrolls up 20 or so selecting multiple so I have to go back and try again. Then the left pane with the folder list moves around all on its own.

Jeebizz 03-27-2011 08:27 PM

Can't go wrong with a classic. Midnight Commander FTW.

mrclisdue 03-27-2011 08:32 PM

I use pcmanfm, available through slackbuilds.org; however, I use the tarball from here:

http://igurublog.wordpress.com/downloads/mod-pcmanfm/

I can't say that I'm aware of any issues, large or small. I like the tabs....

cheers

kingbeowulf 03-27-2011 08:33 PM

I use Xfce and Thunar does ok by me. It's fairly easy to add custom actions.

I use Konquerer to browse SAMBA/SMB shares, as its faster and more stable than Dolphin. I dont have many of those left: the big one is my WNDR3700 WIFI router. The WNDR3700 has USB2.0 for an external drive but only has SAMBA not NFS (one day I'll fix that).

To sort, view, etc., photos, I use Gwenview and sometimes Geegie.

Although, my all time favorite is still Midnight Commander. 'nuff said.

Why not have two copies of Thunar running? One for the source and one for the destination.

Will that work also with VLC?

I noticed that VLC uses gnome icon set when in XFCE although I have set tango on XFCE preferences. Other programs such as Google Chrome and Firefox honors my settings so I will try this out for VLC.

I have no problems with Dolphin in KDE 4.5.5 in -current. I like the thumbnail previews and it works for accessing network shares.
For local file administration as root in a GUI, I usually 'kdesu thunar'.
For CLI ssh sessions, I use Midnight Commander.

mlangdn 03-27-2011 09:30 PM

I use xfe - its available at slackbuilds.org or through sbopkg. It will open /usr/bin in a second and be ready for navigation. Its pretty useful in any WM or DE.

hitest 03-27-2011 10:48 PM

Thunar and xfe.

slakmagik 03-27-2011 11:09 PM

CLI: bash & friends
NCurses: mc
GUI: rox (easy to have multiple windows of thumbnails and drag and drop between them)

Gwenview or digiKam, one or the other, would be the best way (imho) to sort through pictures.
Just my :twocents:
:)

Ilgar 03-28-2011 12:04 AM

Thunar and emelfm2.

Mark Pettit 03-28-2011 01:30 AM

Midnight Commander. Is there anything else better or faster ?

chetamonye 03-28-2011 01:56 AM

thunar with custom actions in openbox. Really nice.

dive 03-28-2011 02:16 AM

Another cli option is ranger: http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13...python-ranger/

chrisretusn 03-28-2011 04:09 AM

I use the tools that come with Slackware. I use Dolphin for general file management while using KDE. For images I like to use Gwenview, it handles my camera downloads just fine. For the heavy duty stuff I fall back to my favorite Midnight Commander.

BroX 03-28-2011 05:01 AM

krusader!

tomtomjkw 03-28-2011 05:15 AM

+1 for krusader.

Gerard Lally 03-28-2011 05:24 AM

Just wish Krusader didn't need KDE libraries to run. An excellent file manager for keyboard users. For non-KDE users a similar FM can be found in EmelFM2.

I use Rox-Filer, because it supports thumbnails. It's quite fast.

Forgot to mention, I'm satisfied with Dolphin. And when I'm posing as a 1337 h4XX0r at runlevel 3 I use Midnight Commander (even during daylight).

clifford227 03-28-2011 05:33 AM

xfe. uses gtk2.

All these years and I thought you could not use Midnight Commander in the day light.

psionl0 03-28-2011 06:56 AM

MC is a very powerful file manager - almost an OS in its own right. However, when I am using the CLI, I find the BASH tools more useful.

I found that ROX seems to have a bug: If I right-click on a file (to select it) I can't select another file. Also it doesn't preview picture files.

That's why I switched to Thunar.

GazL 03-28-2011 07:04 AM

File name tab completion changed the game iMO. Unless I'm dealing with picture files where the thumbnails are a significant advantage I tend to stick to the CLI for file operations these days.
The rest of the time I use thunar, (not out of any like for it, but simply that it's already installed and good enough)

Not sure what the hate for Dolphin is about though. I don't use KDE4, but when I did try it, Dolphin was one of the few things I liked about it.

I tried Rox a few weeks back when I was playing with tiling window managers and was trying to find something that was very keyboard orientated: I couldn't get on with it at all.

malo_umoran 03-28-2011 07:55 AM

only bash tools + screen, sometimes mc and sometimes gsb nautilus.

I can't replicate that bug. It does have previews / thumbnails for images (options->thumbnails->show image thumbnails), and there's an app (videothumbnail) that also adds video previews.

dh2k 03-28-2011 08:24 AM

'thunar' with custom actions and thunar plugins from SBo.
Very intuitive, flexible, stable and works great and integrated perfectly (for me) within my fluxbox WM.
('xfsettingsd &' in my fluxbox startup file)

I like dolphin and konq' but I almost always find my self using thunar.

I actually use my own custom actions for every day tasks such as manipulating files through to specialised scripts/launchers for system admin - all within an easy right-click from thunar.

Also alot easier than making/maintaining dot.desktop files for dolphin/konq' custom actions.

I also add scripts to the 'send to' menu. This way I can send directories to an iso or archive, or combine files titled with .001 .002 .003, etc.

I can replicate the bug but none of the other things you suggested work. Clearly something is missing but as long as I have Thunar, I won't be wasting anymore time with rox.

Oh yes of course its fox, not sure why I thought it was gtk2, probably because it has the same basic feel to it.

Even though I use gnome, I like dolphin because I like the split button. I like easy.
