What's wrong with Slackware

Quote:

After several iterations here refining the foundation packages and
recompiling and tweaking other packages to use PulseAudio, it's working well
and you'll likely not notice much of a change. But if you're using Bluetooth
audio, or needing to direct audio through HDMI, you'll probably find it a lot
easier to accomplish that.
I thought it was a joke. I even thought slackware.com was hacked again (probably they are still using imapd). But it's for real. After countless posts in endless threads about the Unix Phylosophy and the KISS principal. After tons of garbage thrown on L.P. Slackware ships PulseAudio.

It feels so impure. I am speechless.

Cheers

Ach... let's not answer this. Flamewars are pointless.

I'm surprised it took a day.

I believe that hand that you might feel pulling firmly on your ankle belongs to ivandi.

Move on. Better listen Hilary than Ivandi.

She is fascinating in the cadenza of the 1st movement, from 7'26"

bassmadrigal 01-14-2016 04:31 PM

I'll say this and then just step away...

How many of those posts were from Pat? Most of that rhetoric was thrown around by a few key individuals that are not involved in the Slackware development. Pat fixes problems... there was a problem with BlueZ 5, so he fixed it by adding pulseaudio. If he deems that there are insurmountable problems presented by not having PAM, then he is likely to do the same there.

I never saw Pat and team say they aren't adding pulseaudio/PAM/systemd/etc because it goes against the UNIX philosophy or that it doesn't follow the KISS principle.

YIKES!!! I thought you wrote Hillary and was about to call l'hôpital psychiatrique!

But I agree, Hilary is much better listening, and looking!

In times like that I prefer to listen to Valentina.

Ditto.

urbanwks 01-14-2016 04:48 PM

Please, be reasonable... how do you expect Pat and crew to include systemd in 14.3 if they don't break us in with pulse? ;)

Personally, it is precisely what I perceive as Slackware's pragmatism, non-dogmatism, and plain common-sense that draws me to Slackware. Slackware does not exist in a vacuum, and consequently it has to adapt to changes outside its control. Sometimes non-optimal decisions have to be made, but I believe that Slackware has done good decisions in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Even if someday systemd is added to Slackware, I believe it will be made for good reasons, and that it will be implemented well.

That's exactly how I feel.

On a purely pragmatic level I'd like to ask what would be the downside of disabling PulseAudio? In my case, at least in the past, it has not played nicely with Jack which is extremely important to me as I often use my PC as a DAW. I don't foresee ever requiring BlueZ, so is that the extent of the loss?
