These comments in Russian (use google translate, as I did) suggest to make sure the recording is turned off and then to connect it and use usb_modeswitch to enable the storage on the camera:

If it works, that's if you can access the storage, then create an udev rule for automation.

Depends on who reads about a Pi wildlife cam there... can add more features than that, both cheaper and whith more freedom but a digress.

If the USB is not just for charging it should say so?
