hangon, you type startx AFTER starting gnome ? o_O
|
No before.
|
you have to configure X first, as root, run:
xf86config and then as your user, type "startx". If GNOME doesnt come up, run "xwmconfig" as root to change your default WM. |
Doesnt work.
|
You sure you actually installed the Gnome packages?
|
Well, to get it to work, you just have to execute the solution. ;)
Why not tell us WHAT HAPPENS. We cant help you with just "it doesnt work". |
it said,
xf86config invalid command... and then it still says startx isnt a command... |
I have GNOME and KDE installed... I can't even select KDE... now I don't even get that I'm back to where it says No Boot Signature in partition on boot now
|
Silly question, but still: are you typing these command as root? If not, that might be why they're not being picked up. Try running them as root.
:) -zsejk |
All I have is root... I'm running them in root..
|
back to the same siutation now...
I'd be happy with GNOME or anything, right now I says i'm root@darkstar and when I say startx its an invalid command so is xf86config. |
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. That *is* odd. Can you run "xwmconfig" at least? Or does that not work either?
 -zsejk |
xwmconfig works fine and dandy hehe... its really weird.
|
Damn!
:D So.... err.... (zsejk is all out of ideas) .... can you... err... go to the /etc/X11 directory and open the XF86Config file? If so, can you post it here? While you're at it, also please post your /var/log/ XFree86.0.log file. :) -zsejk |
.
Whats the command to open a file?
|
cat /path/to/filename
|
Stupid question... but did you install the XFree86 packages?
|
For future references... I installed EVEYRTHING on the CD
|
Yes. And to keep you from becoming dizzy from the scrolling speed, do:
"cat /path/to/filename | less". -zsejk P.S.: a thread from yesterday night about how to script a file using script and cat and the like (in case you can't both get the file and post it here.. you know, when you're using two separate systems or summin'): http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=85317 edit: Ok... (keep getting beat to the posting here.... grr! ;) ): get that /var/log/blabla file and the /etc/X11/XF86Config file; when we have that we might be able to see what's going on |
K my XF86Config File says
Section "Server Layout" # The Identifier line must be present identifier "Simple Layout" Each screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally a relative position on other screens. The four names after primary screen name are the screens on top, bottom left and right on the primary scree., In this example screen 2 is located and the end of screen 1... BLAH BLAHB ALh then something aboutmy mouse. |
now it says a crap load more stuff that i used the | less command but still nothing that looks config ish
|
Sorry.... I posted the wrong thread URL there. Go to that URL I give above (to be able to get the entire file from one system to the other) and get us the entire /var/log/XFree86.0.log file to start with. We'll get to the xf86config command and the /etc/X11/XF86Config file later.
:) -zsejk |
I wish i had a video card error mine just says there is no startx command
|
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
no such file or directory. |
I know... your error is more sucky.
;) But still, go to my post about how to script a file and transfer it to your Windows system (or in your case maybe RH system) so you can post it here. We'll take the /var/log/XFree86.0.log first methinks. :) -zsejk |
Aarrrrrgh!

If X is installed you will have startx and the necessary xf86config files. Do you even have the /etc/X11/ directory?
If not, then I put it to you again, make sure you have installed the X packages. Use pkgtool to verify. |
Azmeen, I have X installed, I used pkg tool, and I've been all over the X11 Directory... I did a full install as in EVERTHING =p

Have you done whereis startx? Did it return anything? If you do have X installed properly, you should see something like this: Code:
me@slackbox:/var/log$ whereis startx Code:
me@slackbox:/usr$ echo $PATH |
