Slackware issues.

I've installed slackware like 10 times, I got lilo to give it the MBR it boots and all that... but I type startx after selecting gnome as the display and it says command not found. HELP

Mara 08-25-2003 04:36 PM

Which version of Slackware is it?

eosophobia 08-25-2003 04:42 PM

9

phoeniXflame 08-25-2003 04:50 PM

hangon, you type startx AFTER starting gnome ? o_O

eosophobia 08-25-2003 04:56 PM

No before.

contrasutra 08-25-2003 05:02 PM

you have to configure X first, as root, run:

xf86config

and then as your user, type "startx".

If GNOME doesnt come up, run "xwmconfig" as root to change your default WM.

eosophobia 08-25-2003 07:15 PM

Doesnt work.

Azmeen 08-25-2003 07:33 PM

You sure you actually installed the Gnome packages?

contrasutra 08-25-2003 07:33 PM

Well, to get it to work, you just have to execute the solution. ;)

Why not tell us WHAT HAPPENS. We cant help you with just "it doesnt work".

eosophobia 08-25-2003 07:55 PM

it said,

xf86config invalid command...

and then it still says startx isnt a command...

eosophobia 08-25-2003 07:56 PM

I have GNOME and KDE installed... I can't even select KDE... now I don't even get that I'm back to where it says No Boot Signature in partition on boot now

zsejk 08-25-2003 08:19 PM

Silly question, but still: are you typing these command as root? If not, that might be why they're not being picked up. Try running them as root.

:)

-zsejk

eosophobia 08-25-2003 08:36 PM

All I have is root... I'm running them in root..

eosophobia 08-25-2003 08:44 PM

back to the same siutation now...

I'd be happy with GNOME or anything, right now I says i'm root@darkstar and when I say startx its an invalid command so is xf86config.

zsejk 08-25-2003 08:46 PM

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. That *is* odd. Can you run "xwmconfig" at least? Or does that not work either?

-zsejk

eosophobia 08-25-2003 08:51 PM

xwmconfig works fine and dandy hehe... its really weird.

zsejk 08-25-2003 08:56 PM

Damn!

:D

So.... err.... (zsejk is all out of ideas) .... can you... err... go to the /etc/X11 directory and open the XF86Config file? If so, can you post it here? While you're at it, also please post your /var/log/ XFree86.0.log file.

:)

-zsejk

eosophobia 08-25-2003 08:58 PM

.

Whats the command to open a file?

Azmeen 08-25-2003 09:03 PM

cat /path/to/filename

Azmeen 08-25-2003 09:05 PM

Stupid question... but did you install the XFree86 packages?

eosophobia 08-25-2003 09:06 PM

For future references... I installed EVEYRTHING on the CD

zsejk 08-25-2003 09:07 PM

Yes. And to keep you from becoming dizzy from the scrolling speed, do:

"cat /path/to/filename | less".

-zsejk

P.S.: a thread from yesterday night about how to script a file using script and cat and the like (in case you can't both get the file and post it here.. you know, when you're using two separate systems or summin'): http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=85317

edit:

Ok... (keep getting beat to the posting here.... grr! ;) ): get that /var/log/blabla file and the /etc/X11/XF86Config file; when we have that we might be able to see what's going on

eosophobia 08-25-2003 09:10 PM

K my XF86Config File says

Section "Server Layout"

# The Identifier line must be present

identifier "Simple Layout"

Each screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally a relative position on other screens. The four names after primary screen name are the screens on top, bottom left and right on the primary scree., In this example screen 2 is located and the end of screen 1... BLAH BLAHB ALh then something aboutmy mouse.

eosophobia 08-25-2003 09:13 PM

now it says a crap load more stuff that i used the | less command but still nothing that looks config ish

zsejk 08-25-2003 09:14 PM

Sorry.... I posted the wrong thread URL there. Go to that URL I give above (to be able to get the entire file from one system to the other) and get us the entire /var/log/XFree86.0.log file to start with. We'll get to the xf86config command and the /etc/X11/XF86Config file later.

:)

eosophobia 08-25-2003 09:15 PM

I wish i had a video card error mine just says there is no startx command

eosophobia 08-25-2003 09:17 PM

/var/log/XFree86.0.log

no such file or directory.

zsejk 08-25-2003 09:18 PM

I know... your error is more sucky.

;)

But still, go to my post about how to script a file and transfer it to your Windows system (or in your case maybe RH system) so you can post it here. We'll take the /var/log/XFree86.0.log first methinks.

:)

zsejk 08-25-2003 09:21 PM

Aarrrrrgh!

:D

From Azmeen

1) run startx > ~/startx.log. When returned to the prompt, mount your floppy drive and type cp ~/startx.log /your/floppy/mount/point, replace the italics part with your proper floppy mount point.

2) Copy your XF86Config file to that floppy as well.

3) Come back here and paste the contents of those files here.
Does that work?

If X is installed you will have startx and the necessary xf86config files. Do you even have the /etc/X11/ directory?

If not, then I put it to you again, make sure you have installed the X packages. Use pkgtool to verify.

eosophobia 08-26-2003 05:56 AM

Azmeen, I have X installed, I used pkg tool, and I've been all over the X11 Directory... I did a full install as in EVERTHING =p

It's not that I don't believe you, but stating that startx is not in your system when you have installed XFree is like saying you've installed Windows but you can't run command.com or cmd.exe... Yes, it is that illogical!

Have you done whereis startx? Did it return anything? If you do have X installed properly, you should see something like this:
Code:

me@slackbox:/var/log$ whereis startx
startx: /usr/X11R6/bin/startx /usr/bin/X11/startx /usr/X11/bin/startx /usr/X11/man/man1/startx.1x.gz

Next, you should check if /usr/X11R6/bin is in your $PATH by running echo $PATH... You should see something similar to this:
Code:

me@slackbox:/usr$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/opt/kde/bin:/usr/lib/qt-3.1.2/bin:/usr/share/texmf/bin
