Original project announcement on comp.os.linux was 20 years ago today

It's hard to believe, but it's been 20 years since this post. The first release (along with the first public mention of the name) followed 6 days later. I think I can safely say that a lot more people turned out to be interested in this than anticipated. :) Cheers!

Well, that's good, because I put one together. It does not yet have
XFree-86 1.3, but give me about 2 days and it will. This is not like
the MCC release, rather, it is a big system, even more bloated than
SLS :^)

Currently it has all of the same features as SLS 1.02, with these
additions:

1. The newest FAQ
2. Simplified installation procedure.
3. Kernel level .99 pl 11 Alpha.
4. libs and includes at 4.4.1, (without the limits.h problem)
5. GCC at 2.4.3 (may be 2.4.5 soon)
6. Net-2 TCP/IP preconfigured for loopback.
7. Public domain ksh and tcsh 6.04.
8. command line JPEG utilities.

On the X side, XV 3.00 has been added.

Now here's the deal: there are 13 disks in the 'A' series (same as SLS
A, B, and C) and 10 in the X series. I don't have any way to offer this
system publicly. If I tried to put it up on our 3b2 it would kill it.

This system has been used among my associates here since we put the
first one together back at pl8. Our original goal was just to debug the
SLS releases, but those have been slowing down and we happened to get a
jump on things.

I'd like to hear from you if this package sounds appealing. If demand is
not too strong, I may test releasing it on the 3b2 here.

If you have an archive site for it, LET ME KNOW! I'll set you up with a
copy of it to put up for FTP.

Take care,

Yes, quite appealing.

I did end up releasing it on the AT&T 3b2 UNIX PC. Those didn't come with FTP services, but I found a .mil site with binaries and instructions for setting it up. The 1.00 release was offered from there.

Killed the box dead in about an hour, and more or less DoSed the whole campus network for a week. I think we were connected by frame relay at the time.

Here's to another 20 years of Slackware:hattip:

Didier Spaier 07-11-2013 03:41 PM

Congrats Pat, you may rightfully be proud of such a great achievement :hattip:

And a warm thank you for delivering an even better Slackware at each release.

kabamaru 07-11-2013 03:53 PM

You killed my distro-hopping joy. So congrats.

Cheers, Patrick, and thank you! Incidently, Slackware and I share the same birthday, July 17th. Awesome.

I can't help but think:

"It was twenty years ago today,
volkerdi showed the users a new way..."

Congratulations! Happy Anniversary/Birthday, Slackware!! Thanks, Pat, and Praise "Bob"!!!

Thank you for all your hard work, and thank you to everyone who has helped you over the years. You've made the last 9 years of my computing a pleasure.

The love of my life walked out on me on July 11th 1993. Funny how it goes. :)

I would say there's quite a bit of personal satisfaction in maintaining Slackware but has it grown over those two decades to become financially rewarding? Enough to keep a family?

Best of luck for the next 20 years to you.

irgunII 07-11-2013 07:00 PM

Happy Anniversary, Patrick! You showed me the way and it's where I'll stay!

allend 07-11-2013 07:01 PM

Wow! 20 years on and interest in Slackware still kills boxes. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ne-4175466948/

Shall we tell 'she who cannot be named' of the most excellent and remarkable achievement that interest in Slackware is keeping pace with Moore's law?

D1ver 07-11-2013 07:03 PM

Thanks Pat for the Amazing distro. Hope to see 20 more years :)

Best Wishes on Your 20th Anniversary!

Slackware has been my "Linux" since 1995. I've never regretted that choice.
Thanks, Patrick. I hope you're up for another 20 years.

Darned - I have used slackware (on and off admittedly) since spring '96 ... beaten by a year!!
Happy anniversary Pat!
Just keep'em rolling and I'll be a more than happy recipient!

This is the part that gets me. I don't think I've ever heard Slackware called bloated.

It was commonly accused of being bloated on USENET for the first 3 or so years. Makes me shake my head now...

paul_s 07-11-2013 09:40 PM

Thank you for years of wonderful work.

My only distro for the last 13 years (and my daughter's, who's about to turn 13).

All the best for the next 20.

Kallaste 07-11-2013 10:09 PM

Wow, 20 years . . . that's really amazing.

It kind of makes me wonder a bit about the bigger picture. What would the world be like without Slackware? I mean, I'm sure the consequences of that original project extended way beyond the obvious. It has the makings of an alternative history novel. Scary stuff! :)

Thank you Pat for all you have done, and continue to do! I believe the world is richer for it.

ReaperX7 07-11-2013 10:15 PM

Here's to 20 years of Slackware, and here's to 20 more years God willing.

Huzzah!!!

Deepest gratitude sir, for making my computing life tolerable. Fantastic work!

michaelslack 07-12-2013 12:16 AM

Congratulations Pat. The creation of the original slackware was a hell of an achievement, but has been dwarfed in comparison to your keeping it going and nurturing it to its terrific -current state.

Much thanks for giving us an operating system that is a source of joy rather than annoyance.

Finally, slackware is young, almost three times younger than me,

a French song said, "on n'a pas tous les jours vingt ans"

Joyeux anniversaire .............. ;)

YellowApple 07-12-2013 01:16 AM

Happy birthday, Slackware! Only one more year before I can legally run 'installpkg beer.txz' on you ;)

I'm tempted to grab a copy of a very early release (1.01 is on mirrors.slackware.com; I wonder if any older versions are lingering on some old FTP server somewhere) and see if I can get it installed. I already have SLS running on my oldest machine (Compaq Presario 1210) and it would be fun to play with them side-by-side and see the similarities and differences.

01micko 07-12-2013 01:37 AM

Thanks!

Happy "Slack" Day!

mjjzf 07-12-2013 01:55 AM

Praise Bob!
And thank you, Pat for the work put into this and the attention to the community.
My machine has been dual-boot for a long time: A Slackware partition for things to work and another partition for trying out all the other new stuff. Slackware runs solidly and it stays where it is.
This occasion calls for a donation, by the way.

fsauer 07-12-2013 02:03 AM

Congratulations!

And a HUGE "Thank You" to Pat!

linux user 188738, and permanently on Slackware :)

Have used Slackware on and off since the late 90's until I decided to completely dump Windows. Here's the book that got me started:

Thanks and congratulations Pat.

lonestar_italy 07-12-2013 02:45 AM

It's great to have Slackware celebrate its anniversary almost the same day of my birthday (today) :-)

solarfields 07-12-2013 02:59 AM

Thank you!

sardinha 07-12-2013 04:15 AM

Thank you, Patrick!

Congratulations, you have shown to us how a nice guy can lead the greatest linux distribution.

kooru 07-12-2013 04:32 AM

Congratulations ;)

jostber 07-12-2013 04:56 AM

Congrats and happy birthday! Many thanks for making, developing and maintaining the greatest Linux distribution around. :)

So I was just a 6 years old restless curly hair kid when Pat created that one OS which 20 years later killed my reckless distro-hopping.
Its a beer day for me. Congrats to Pat and the entire crew.

Regards.

Twenty years of coolness.

Philip Lacroix 07-12-2013 05:56 AM

When I found Slackware I found peace. :) Let's keep supporting this valuable operating system, to help keeping it sane and free from false innovations pushed by RHEL-hired, would-be "prophets". Thanks for the great job!

And praise "Bob" for inspiring it.

ricky_cardo 07-12-2013 06:30 AM

Well done Pat keep up the great work!!!

I think Pat needs a beer for celebration and testing of course.
