maple v and slackware
Has anyone had any luck getting this program to work with slackware?
Edit: Can you recommend an open source program similar to maple? I heard Maxima is good |
Hello, I haven't tried to run Maple on linux but if you like a computer algebra system try Maxima or other CAS (there are a lot). Also if you prefer numerical computation like Matlab there is a free software called GNU Octave and it's nice because its syntax is similar to Matlab.

Im not too impressed with maxima since it fails to run on my computer, even after an error free install.

I personally have yet to find a CAS, running on linux or windows, that actually has the functionality I wanted. What kind of functionality are you looking for? Solving algebraic equations, or number crunching?
--C |
Mostly solving equations.
I would also like to use the same language as Maple, which apparently Maxima does. I haven't been able to get Maxima running on my computer yet though. |
I attempted (and failed) to get Maple 10 to work on Wine. Wouldn't get past the installation stage. At present it's one of only two programs (the other is Sibelius) that I have to use on XP.

Maple has Linux version.

I didn't have the linux version. Got it second-hand off a friend.

I actually own a linux copy of Maple V, but was unable to install it.
Don't remember the exact problem but I spent a weekend a few years ago trying to install it but couldn't (I seem to recall that it needed an old version of elflibs or something that I also couldn't install). From what I read Maxima has better functionality than Maple V with the same math language interface. One of these days I will make a serious attempt to get it up and running. |

Thanks for the link. I was able to get Maxima running with that package.
I may have had errors running Maxima because I didnt have rlwrap |
I installed wxMaxima, a gui for Maxima. I am still getting a feel for it but so far I'm impressed.
