Hello, I haven't tried to run Maple on linux but if you like a computer algebra system try Maxima or other CAS (there are a lot). Also if you prefer numerical computation like Matlab there is a free software called GNU Octave and it's nice because its syntax is similar to Matlab.
I personally have yet to find a CAS, running on linux or windows, that actually has the functionality I wanted. What kind of functionality are you looking for? Solving algebraic equations, or number crunching?
I would also like to use the same language as Maple, which apparently Maxima does. I haven't been able to get Maxima running on my computer yet though.
I attempted (and failed) to get Maple 10 to work on Wine. Wouldn't get past the installation stage. At present it's one of only two programs (the other is Sibelius) that I have to use on XP.
I actually own a linux copy of Maple V, but was unable to install it.
Don't remember the exact problem but I spent a weekend a few years ago trying to install it but couldn't (I seem to recall that it needed an old version of elflibs or something that I also couldn't install).
From what I read Maxima has better functionality than Maple V with the same math language interface.
One of these days I will make a serious attempt to get it up and running.
