gxine browser plugin
 

I use gxine for Mozilla to view clips on Slack. The version I have is 0.3.3. I can view clips up to about 3 times, and the 3rd or fourth time, my Mozilla crashes. I got gxine via swaret and 0.3.3 is the current one according to swaret. Is there a newer version I should get that is less buggy? I would rather have swaret do it.

I haven't tried the gxine plugin. And I hate it when someone responds to a question about a program by telling them to use another program......but........ in this case, I think you may find the MPlayer plugin to be more robust. It's at version 2.60, and it ROCKS! It plays EVERYTHING! Obviously, you need MPlayer to use it, also available via swaret. http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/

I have used mplayer in the past and yes it does rock. However, can it be integrated into Mozilla? With mplayer I would have to save movies to my hard-drive and play it from the command line, rather then have it play right in Mozilla.

EDIT: Nevermind. I'm looking at the link now and yes it can! :)

akshunj is right, the mplayer plugin can play almost anything. I like xine, though I prefer mplayer, but it's plugin shurely isn't what it is supposed to be. A pity though, 'cause when you look at the common distro's like Mandrake, you often see that they choose Xine to be the default player (or some frontend to xine). I think xine is a bit to clumsy and mplayer rocks 'cause it is simple, straightforward and just works.

I don't know if this will help you any but I use the gxine that came on the slack 9.1 cd (0.3.3)
with firefox and crashes are few and far between.
I use the codecs from mplayer.

I got the mplayer mozilla plugin working fairly well. The main thing I noticed is it doesn't play .wmv files. Anyway I can get it to play those?

Hmmm, my mplayer plays the .wmv's perfectly. If you have just installed mplayer, make sure you have all of the windows codecs installed. Check out mplayer's website... www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/

Ok I got esentiall-*.tar.bz and put those files in /usr/local/lib/codecs. However, it says that you should do this before compiling mplayer. I didn't compile mplayer myself; I used the slackware binary. Should I uninstall and reinstall the slackware binary now? And should I recompile the mozilla mplayer plugin now that I got the libraries?

I compiled my own mplayer and have the mplayerplug-in with the wmv codecs (I have some videos on my system). Those that I play from the HD work fine, but if I go to gamespot.com and attempt to view the videos there it doesn't work. It'll play the asf file but then it gets stuck and doesn't go on.

Hmmm, although I am a nut who likes to compile MPlayer, I recall that Slackware's pre-compiled binary came with support for all of the codecs. But I can't be sure. You can always try compiling MPlayer yourself. Probably one of the trickier compiles, as it has a slew of dependencies. MPlayer has a compile faq on it's homepage, but the down 'n dirty FAQ on the mplayer-plugin website is a bit more useful IMHO. Also, I'll test out my plugin on some streaming .wmv's, as perhaps I misremember the plugins abilities.

Ok stupid question. I want to stop xine from being the default player or plugin for Moz, how do I do that?

Delete a certain file. I forgot what it was. To find out, click help, then about-plugins. Find xine and it will tell you what .so (or whatever file extension) file it is using.

EDIT: That is to delete it. Not sure how to still keep xine and use another player as the default. But that is what I did anyway.

Remove the plugin from wherever you installed it (mozilla plugin dir) and/or remove the mime-type from the helper applications under Mozilla's Preferences menu.

Ok, I noticed it plays some .wmv clips, but there are some I try to open up in Mozilla that won't open; instead it displays a whole bunch of jibberish code.
