I have not encountered any of these issues on --Current, but I don't use Skype. I generally listen to saved files or to streams. Are these issues restricted to Skype?

Skype loads with my XFCE desktop. When it loads it makes a sound. Sometimes this is the only sound I listen to and sometimes I watch a YouTube video. I will have to pay attention when the level is low again. For now it is holding its own

Today upon booting up I didn't hear Skype. I tried the Skype test sound and had to strain to hear it. Checked the volume controls and
pulse = 150 (down from 153)
alsamixer = 150 (down from 153)
root alsamixer = 150 (unchanged)
I tried a YouTube video and have faint volume with the speakers. With the headphones it is tolerable but certainly not stellar.
I moved the slider on pulse back up to 153 and tried it. No change in volume.

EDIT - After an hour or so I tried the Skype test sound again and it is OK now (scratching head)

Why don't to change it so Skype doesn't start when you login to your linux account. Change it so that you have to start the Skype application manually. One of the Skype settings is to automatically adjust the microphone levels - maybe its mixed up somehow. Anyways if Skype doesn't start automatically then you can tell if Skype is the cause or not.
